Emmanuelle Riva has sadly passed away at the age of 89.

The French actress was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in the movie Amour in 2013 and the film won the award for Best Foreign Language Film. Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress award that year.

Emmanuelle died on Friday night (January 27) in Paris after a long battle with cancer. She worked until last summer, when she filmed the movie Alma and also performed on stage in Rome.

Riva never married or had children, but she is survived by an amazing legacy of films throughout her career. We send our condolences to all of her loved ones during this difficult time.

The Oscar-nominated actress is celebrating her 86th birthday TODAY and she is nominated for Best Actress for her work in Amour!

Emmanuelle is nominated against Silver Linings Playbook‘s Jennifer Lawrence, Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jessica Chastain, The Impossible‘s Naomi Watts, and Beasts of the Southern Wild‘s Quvenzhane Wallis.

The 85-year-old actress, who will celebrate her 86th birthday tomorrow while attending the 2013 Academy Awards, is being considered a frontrunner to win the Best Actress award for her work in Amour.

The night before, Emmanuelle picked up the Best Actress prize at the 2013 Cesar Film Awards at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France.

Emmanuelle Riva has won a very coveted prize at the 2013 EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday (February 10) at the Royal Opera House in London, England.

The 85-year-old French actress took home the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Anne Laurent in Amour.

Emmanuelle went up against Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Marion Cotillard, and Helen Mirren for the trophy.

Congratulations, Emmanuelle!!

Other winner’s for the evening included Anne Hathaway, Daniel Day-Lewis, Ben Affleck for Best Director, and Argo for Best Film.
