Jamie Dornan Looks Back at 'Fifty Shades,' the Movie's Bad Reviews, & Crazy Fan Mail

Jamie Dornan is looking back on his Fifty Shades of Grey days in a brand new interview.

The 38-year-old actor, who is currently promoting his upcoming film Wild Mountain Thyme, chatted with Variety about the Fifty Shades movies’ poor reviews, the crazy fan mail he received, and how he moved on from the franchise.

Jamie said that someone sent him “a collage of photographs of a kid” and a note about Christian Grey. He said, “Someone saying that it was my kid, and my wife should know that I have this kid who’s 7 years old. I think they were trying to say that the kid was mine and Dakota Johnson’s, and we’d had this baby while we made the first Fifty Shades movie. It piqued our interest, let’s say. It was a bit freaky.”

Here is more that he had to share:

On the Fifty Shades of Grey films that made him a movie star, despite bad reviews: “The thing that I’m probably most famous for is a monsterly successful franchise that was not critically loved. It’s a strange thing going into those films knowing that you’re going to be in a franchise that will probably make so much money and get negatively reviewed, because those books made so much money and were really negatively reviewed.”

On reading bad reviews of Fifty Shades of Grey: “I went through a bad stage with Fifty Shades of reading a couple of really bad ones, but then just finding them funny and letting them drive me. One of them was ‘Jamie Dornan has the charisma of oatmeal,’ which — some people like oatmeal, so I thought it was kind of harsh. I remember that stuck with me, and I don’t entirely disagree with it either.”

On moving on from the Fifty Shades franchise: “I was ready to move on from this crazy chapter in my life. No matter who I was playing, I don’t think I’d want to play a character for multiple, multiple films. I think I’d just get really bored of that.”

Brant Daugherty, who played the role of Sawyer, part of Christian Grey’s personal security team, in Fifty Shades Freed, is pitching his unique idea for a fourth film in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise.

“I kept pitching Fifty Shades 4 where Sawyer hunted Christian and Ana for sport but everyone passed for some reason,” Brant tweeted, jokingly.

Well, Fifty Shades author EL James actually liked the idea so…maybe it has some legs!?

If you don’t know, the Fifty Shades franchise starred Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele.

Find out who actually turned down the role of Anastasia Steele.

Lucy Hale Looks Back at 'Fifty Shades' Audition: 'I Was Mortified'

Lucy Hale is opening up about auditioning for the role of Anastasia Steele in the movie Fifty Shades of Grey.

The casting process for the movie happened in the summer of 2013, when Lucy was starring on the Freeform series Pretty Little Liars. The role ended up going to Dakota Johnson.

“I was very young. It had to have been, not 10 years ago, it was a while ago and I was mortified,” Lucy told the Associated Press about her audition. “It wasn’t actual scenes from the movie, but it was a very sexually forward monologue and I didn’t really even know what I was saying in the audition. I was a little naive about it all, but yes, I did audition. I obviously didn’t get the part, but it was good for me because it scared the crap out of me to do an audition [like that].”

Lucy previously talked about her audition during a Cosmopolitan cover story in 2014.

Emilia Clarke Explains Why She Turned Down 'Fifty Shades'

Emilia Clarke is opening up about being in the running for the role of Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey and why she turned down the role.

The 32-year-old actress told THR how she is not looking to do a sequel right now and that led to a discussion of Fifty Shades.

“One thing I would not like to do is something that would have a sequel. Something that could have, like, ‘And then two and then three and then four.’ I’d like to not do one of those for a minute,” Emilia initially said.

“Well, Sam [Taylor-Johnson, the director] is a magician. I love her, and I thought her vision was beautiful. But the last time that I was naked on camera on [Game of Thrones] was a long time ago, and yet it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman,” Emilia said while discussing Fifty Shades. “And it’s annoying as hell and I’m sick and tired of it because I did it for the character — I didn’t do it so some guy could check out my tits, for God’s sake.”

“So, that coming up, I was like, ‘I can’t,’” she explained. “I did a minimal amount and I’m pigeonholed for life, so me saying yes to that, where the entire thing is about sensuality and sex and being naked and all of that stuff, I was just like, ‘No way am I going to voluntarily walk into that situation and then never be able to look someone in the eye and be like, no, you can’t keep asking me this question.’”

The role of Anastasia Steele went to Dakota Johnson and it turned her into a big star.

'Fifty Shades' Writer E.L. James Announces New 'Passionate, Erotic' Book 'The Mister'

E.L. James has a new book coming out, and it sounds just as steamy as the Fifty Shades books!

The book is titled “The Mister” and she announced the news on the Today show.

“It’s a 21st century Cinderella,” she said, describing the new story as “a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.”

The lead male character is named Maxim Trevelyan, and in one passage he’s described as, “stretched across the length of the bed, tangled in his duvet but naked . . . very naked. His face is turned toward her but covered by unkempt brown hair.”

The main female character is named Alessia Demachi.

She promises it’s a “passionate, erotic love story,” and it will hit store shelves on April 16.

Jamie Dornan Probably Won't Take a Job Like 'Fifty Shades' Ever Again

Jamie Dornan is grateful for everything that Fifty Shades of Grey brought him and has nothing but positive things to say about the franchise, though he doesn’t think he’ll do a similar project in the future.

In a new interview with Vulture, the 36-year-old actor was asked if he sees himself entering a new phase of his career now that the Fifty Shades franchise has ended.

“I don’t see it like that, no,” Jamie replied. “They’re perceived the way they’re perceived. Critically, that’s not very favorably. But they made a lot of money, and as studio pictures go, they’re pretty unique. To speak for myself, and I’ll speak for Dakota as well, it’s another job on another set.”

“I probably won’t ever take a job with this much attention and scrutiny and public opinion directed at it again. And that’s fine! From a practical point of view, you just move on to the next and keep your head down,” Jamie added. “But listen, it’s given us so much. The work that I’ve been doing has been a million miles from that, and not even by choice. You just keep plugging away, doing good work, and trying to better yourself.”

Jamie had a lot of positive things to say about Fifty Shades.

“It was mad, a mad thing to be involved in. It was so big in its scale and the reception, and it remains beloved to many people,” Jamie said. “As a life experience, I’m glad I could go through it. Though now, it almost feels like it didn’t happen? It’s that thing where you film it, maybe do some reshoots, and then you’re on your way. For the fans, it’s all-encompassing, spending all your time waiting for the next book or the next movie. Dakota and I kept coming in and out of it, going to promote it and do press and reimmerse yourself in the hysteria. And then you’re away from it again! It was a strange time, but without that, I don’t get to do Anthropoid, I don’t get to do A Private War, you get the idea.”
