Ron Howard Explains His History with 'Star Wars' in New Interview

Ron Howard is opening up about his history with the Star Wars franchise and director George Lucas upon the news that he is the new director of the Han Solo spin-off movie.

The 63-year-old director says that the gig was “a little opportunity that came my way.”

Ron spoke out on Friday (June 23) while being interviewed at the Cannes Lions Festival.

“I’ve been around the Star Wars universe from the beginning,” he said (via Deadline). “When I was being directed by George Lucas on American Graffiti in 1972, we were standing out in front of Mel’s Drive-In in San Francisco where we were shooting and I said, ‘Do you know what you think your next film might be?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I want to do a science fiction movie, but a really fun one like Flash Gordon with the effects of Stanley Kubrick‘s 2001.’ I thought, ‘That sounds like a kind of crazy idea.’”

Ron also said how he and his wife waited in line for two hours to see the first Star Wars movie in 1977 and they loved it so much that they waited another 90 minutes to see it again that same day!

“So many people involved with the Star Wars franchise are friends, so it’s gratifying to be able to lend my voice to the universe – coming in when it’s already been in production and there is a great amount of work done,” he added.

Ron Howard to Direct Han Solo Movie After Directors' Exit

Ron Howard has been named the new director of the upcoming untitled Han Solo movie following co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller‘s exit from the film.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker was the first director rumored to be in the running to replace the 21 Jump Street directors and now the news is official.

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

Howard has been friends with George Lucas for decades and he even revealed a couple years ago that Lucas approached him to director The Phantom Menace in the late 90s.

The movie still has several weeks left of production and Howard will reportedly begin working immediately to review the footage already shot and figure out a plan of action to move forward with completing principal photography.

Star Wars' Han Solo Spinoff Movie Loses Its Directors

The upcoming Han Solo spinoff movie will need to find a new director after Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were let go as co-directors due to creative differences with Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm president and Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy released a statement on StarWars.com to announce the news.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” she said.

Phil and Chris previously co-directed the movies 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” the guys said in a statement.

Alden Ehrenreich is playing a young Han Solo in the movie, which has already begun production. The May 2018 release date will not change despite the directorial change.
