Helena Bonham Carter Once Had a Drunken Request for Prince William

Helena Bonham Carter is opening up about the drunken request she once had for Prince William.

The 53-year-old The Crown actress made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday (November 26) and a fan asked if she really asked William to be her daughter’s godfather.

“I wasn’t that drunk, but enough drunk for me not to drink anymore,” Helena said. “He wasn’t totally sober himself. Not in a bad way, it was just very jolly.”

“Thing is, I’d spent all my friends as godparents on my first child, so Billy had 11 godparents. So, I thought I could make up for Nell, you know who suddenly came along and we didn’t have any left. I thought, ‘Well, if I give her Prince William that would cover,’ you know?” she added.

Helena says that William turned down the request.

“He just said, ‘You don’t want me to be godfather to your child.’ And I left. I mean obviously, it didn’t work out,” she said.

Helena shares 16-year-old son Billy and 11-year-old daughter Nell with ex-partner Tim Burton.

Helena Bonham Carter Actually Knew Princess Margaret, Years Before Playing Her in 'The Crown'

Helena Bonham Carter poses in character as Princess Margaret on the new digital cover of Town & Country magazine.

The beloved actress is starring in season three of Netflix’s The Crown and she’s featured in a cool moving image for the magazine’s digital cover, which you can see in action below. Here’s what she had to share with the mag:

On her family connection to Princess Margaret: “My uncle courted Margaret at one point. They went on to become good, longtime friends. She would be at his parties, and you were very aware that a princess was there. I remember going, ‘I mustn’t turn my back on her, I mustn’t turn my back on her.’”

On Princess Margaret’s obsession to be taller than she was: “She didn’t have a complex about being number two, she had a complex about being short. That’s why she wore the Poltimore Tiara, which was at least four inches tall, at her wedding. She even had the seat of her car raised so that she could be visible. The risk that she might be literally overlooked was the problem, not the fact that she was her sister’s younger sister.”

On wondering if Princess Margaret would be happy she played her: “One of her idiosyncrasies was complimenting somebody and putting them down at the same time. She once said to me, ‘Oh, you’re getting so much better at acting,’ and I thought that was really funny. Now, I think she’d be grateful that I was getting better, since she’s been entrusted to me. If I was a shit actress, it would be like, ‘Oh no, not her!’”

Helena Bonham Carter Opens Up About Moving On After Split from Tim Burton

Helena Bonham Carter looks so regal on the cover of the new Harper’s Bazaar UK issue for December 2019, on newsstands October 30.

Here is what the actress, who is joining season three of The Crown as Princess Margaret, had to share with the mag:

On moving on from her relationship with Tim Burton with new boyfriend Rye Dag Holmboe: “You break up, you grieve, you get bored of grieving, and then you finally move on. I’m very happy with someone else. It’s been a bit of unexpected magic in my life.”

On ageing as an actress: “When I turned 50, I worried it was downhill all the way. But it’s quite the opposite. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier or more fulfilled. This huge blooming of television means character-driven stories, so there’s a lot of choice and a lot of work. When I was young, you were considered ‘older’ over 30.”

On taking on the role of Princess Margaret: “I wanted to do her justice. If someone does, as people said, behave rudely, there’s always a reason. It usually means that they’re unhappy.”
