Melissa Barrera is opening up about the disappointing box office numbers for her movie musical In The Heights, which was released back in June 2021.
At the time, people had just started going back to the movies amid the COVID-19 pandemic and In The Heights was also released on HBO Max on the same day it hit theaters.
The movie only earned $29.88 million at the domestic box office.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is looking back at the controversy surrounding his movie In The Heights.
Earlier this year, the 41-year-old Tony Award winner faced some backlash over the lack of Black Latinx performers in the movie adaption of his Broadway show.
At the time, Lin-Manuel addressed the issue of colorism, saying, “In trying to paint a mosaic of this community, we fell short. I’m truly sorry. I’m learning from the feedback, I thank you for raising it, and I’m listening.”
In a new interview released on Monday (November 15), Lin-Manuel once again addressed the criticism, clapping back at cancel culture.

Anthony Ramos is opening up about the poor box office numbers for his new movie In the Heights and why he’s not disappointed by them.
The 29-year-old actor plays Usnavi in the new movie musical, which was created by his Hamilton co-star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Box office experts had predicted that In the Heights would gross $20 million on its opening weekend, but it only brought in $11.5 million. The film has now been open for 15 days and it has grossed an estimated $22.5 million.

Rita Moreno is apologizing for her recent comments.
Earlier this week, the 89-year-old Oscar-winning actress defended pal Lin-Manuel Miranda and director John M. Chu for not casting more dark-skinned Afro-Latinx performers in In The Heights.
“It’s like you can never do right, it seems. This is the man who literally has brought Latino-ness and Puerto Rican-ness to America,” Rita said in defense of Lin-Manuel.
After receiving backlash, Rita took to Twitter on Wednesday (June 16) to apologize for her comments.

Just hours after Jon M. Chu opened up about Afro-Latinx representation on the screen in his new movie, In The Heights, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is also addressing the issue of colorism.
The issue was brought up after the debut of the film, which is in theaters and streaming on HBO Max now.
Fans had revealed their grievances about not seeing more Black Latinx performers in the movie.
