Ellen Pompeo Shares Her Opinion on the Ending of Karev's Storyline on 'Grey's Anatomy'

Ellen Pompeo has written a letter to fans following a pivotal episode of her show Grey’s Anatomy, which included the farewell of original cast member Justin Chambers‘ character Alex Karev.

In the episode, we found out that Alex will not be returning to his wife Jo and he has instead reunited with his ex-wife Izzie (played by Katherine Heigl), who secretly gave birth to their twins a decade ago.

The reaction from fans to this conclusion to Karev’s storyline has been very mixed, with some hardcore fans very upset by what happened. 50% of our readers voted in our poll that they would’ve ended things differently.

“Hi here I go again … Thank YOU! You are truly the best most passionate most loyal fans anyone could ever ask for. Because of you we got to make great tv… because of you we got to make television history!” Ellen wrote on Instagram. “I say often life is hard and thank God it is because like I tell my kids… it shows us what we are made …of how strong we really are and let’s face it… without the lows there would be no dancing it out or celebrating this incredible experience we call life.”

“Thanks to our national treasure @therealdebbieallen and the writers for giving Alex Karev the best send off. Thanks to @shondarhimes for creating the most amazing character. For me personally for Karev to go back to the beginning…. was the best possible storyline,” Ellen said.

She added, “It pays homage to those incredible first years and the incredible cast …that created a foundation so strong that the show is still standing. So let’s not be sad. As our fearless leader DA always says let’s PULL UP and celebrate the actors the writers and the fantastic crew who make this show come to life every week. No matter what the challenge or how tired we all are in the end… you keep us going…..That is worth dancing it out over! So much love and gratitude to you all. Xo E.”

Here's How 'Grey's Anatomy' Addressed Alex Karev's Absence in Midseason Premiere After Justin Chambers' Exit

Dr. Alex Karev has officially left Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Earlier this month, Justin Chambers announced that he was leaving Grey’s Anatomy after 15 years.

It was also revealed that the 49-year-old actor’s final episode was on November 14, when Dr. Karev returned home to care for his sick mother. However, there was no dramatic send-off for his character, as is usually customary for Grey’s Anatomy.

During the Grey’s midseason premiere on Thursday (January 23), the characters briefly addressed Karev’s absence.

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) visited Alex’s wife Jo Wilson Karev (Camilla Luddington) at their apartment and noticed that Alex wasn’t there.

“He’s visiting his mom,” Jo explained.
