Bette Midler, Lorne Michaels & More Will Be Honored at 44th Annual Kennedy Center Honors

Bette Midler and Lorne Michaels are just two of the stars who will be honored at the Kennedy Center Honors this year.

The 75-year-old singer and 76-year-old Saturday Night Live creator will be toasted alongside musician Joni Mitchell, Motown founder Berry Gordy and opera singer Justino Diaz.

The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.

They have been presented since 1978, culminating each December in a star-studded gala celebrating the honorees in the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C.

Just a few months ago, the 2020 honorees – including Dick Van Dyke and Debbie Allen – were honored in a delayed event, due to the pandemic.

“Growing up in Detroit, I was not only Black but the ‘black sheep’ of my family,” Berry shared in a statement of the honor. “I was a failure at everything I did until I was 29 years old… The Arts not only give voice to the voiceless, but connect us, transform us, and soothe our souls. The Kennedy Center Honors epitomizes the recognition and value of both the Arts, and the Artist.”

Bette added in her own, “I am profoundly touched by this honor, in fact, I am stunned and grateful beyond words. For many years I have watched this broadcast celebrating the best talent in the performing arts that America has to offer, and I truly never imagined that I would find myself among these swans.”
