Great British Bake Off Star Mary Berry Receives Damehood!

Mary Berry is officially a dame!

The 86-year-old Great British Bake Off judge was honored with a Dame Commander appointment during an investiture ceremony with Prince Charles held at Windsor castle on Wednesday afternoon (October 20) in Windsor, England.

Mary showed off her medal, and posed for pics with husband Paul Hunnings, before revealing their plans after the ceremony.

“I’m extremely proud and honored, I just wish my parents were here — they’re looking down and my children are quite excited,” she shared in an interview with The Evening Standard. “My aim is to pass on the skill that I love so much, because everybody has to cook each day, whether it’s a student or whatever it is, you’ve got to feed yourself so why not learn to do it well and enjoy it.

Mary and Paul then revealed that they were headed home for a family celebration.

“We’re going home for a sandwich, and the children are coming tonight,” she said.

If you didn’t know, Mary has a special connection to the royal family in this way.

The royal couple got into a friendly baking challenge during their Christmas special with British cook and Great British Bakeoff‘s Mary Berry.

Prince William and Kate competed to see who could make the best meringue roulades, but ended up bending the rules just a bit.

Prince William was helped by Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain, who rolled his roulade “while Mary’s not looking,” and Kate sprinkled icing sugar on hers after the clock ran out.

In the end, Mary couldn’t pick a winner and declared it a draw.

“It’s a draw. I don’t want to quarrel with either of you,” Mary said. “Well done for being so sporting – I know you’re both very competitive.”

A Berry Royal Christmas premieres on BBC One at 8:30pm on Monday, December 16.
