It’s been a very emotional past few years for Rashida Jones.

A few days before her 45th birthday on Thursday (February 25), the Parks & Rec actress opened up about what it was like losing her mom Peggy Lipton just a few short months after she welcomed her son Isaiah.

“This has been a very emotionally intense couple of years,” Rashida shared with NPR. “… It was sort of like back-to-back-to-back-to-back, just wrenching, pulling my heart in all different directions. … I was in grief-shock. I don’t even know if that’s a word, but I was just not in my body at all and just had a baby. I was doubly not in my body.”

Rashida and longtime partner Ezra Koenig very quietly welcomed their son Isaiah in August 2018. Eight months later in May 2019, Rashida‘s mom Peggy died at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer.

“The thing that’s the craziest about birth and death is just the utter rawness of feeling,” Rashida continued. “I still feel this way, I think. It’s like something cracks in you. It’s very binary, both things — becoming a mother and losing my mother — like, there’s my life before and there’s my life after. And strangely, there’s something that’s not recognizable before those two things happened.”

Rashida added, “It’s just this utter rawness of emotion where it doesn’t matter where I am, what I’m doing. If I’m overwhelmed by that grief or that joy, that’s it. I have to feel that thing. I can’t suppress it. I can’t run away from it. It’s just there.”

Rashida Jones is celebrating what would have been her mom Peggy Lipton‘s 74th birthday.

The 44-year-old Parks & Rec actress took to Instagram on Sunday (August 30) to wish her mom a happy birthday.

“Happy birthday mama. I feel you smiling down on us. Miss you everyday in every way,” Rashida wrote along with a black and white photo of Peggy.

Rashida‘s sister Kidada also shared the same photo of Peggy on her Instagram, along with the caption, “My first love. My true love. My forever love 🌹Happy Birthday my precious mommy.”

Peggy passed away in May 2019 after a battle with cancer.

After marrying Quincy Jones in 1974, Peggy took a step back from the spotlight to raise their daughters. After their divorce in 1989, Peggy returned to acting starring in Twin Peaks.

Quincy Jones is paying tribute to his late ex-wife Peggy Lipton, who died over the weekend.

The two stars were married for 14 years and are parents to two daughters – Rashida (pictured here) and Kidada.

“There is absolutely no combination of words that can express the sadness I feel after losing my beloved Peggy Lipton…. My wife of 14 years. We shared many, many beautiful memories, and most importantly, we share two incredible daughters… Pie (Kidada) & Doonkie (Rashida). Regardless of the paths that our lives took us on, I can say with the utmost certainty, that love is eternal. Thank you all for the love and support you’ve shown me and my family,” he wrote in a statement on Twitter.

Rashida and Kidada added in a statement that fans can make donations to Seasons Hospice in lieu of flowers or gifts.

Peggy Lipton is being remembered by her Twin Peaks co-stars.

After hearing news of her death, Kyle MacLachlan took to Twitter to pay tribute to his co-star, who played Double R Diner owner Norma Jennings on the show.

“The RR diner is dark today. Very sorry to hear Peggy Lipton is gone,” the 60-year-old actor, who played Dale Cooper on the show, wrote. “We’ve lost a beautiful soul.”

Fellow Twin Peaks cast mate Mädchen Amick – who played Shelly Johnson – took to Instagram to write a heartfelt tribute to Peggy.

“I lost a sister today. She was a true angel on earth. Always the coolest in the room. You couldn’t fit anymore love into that gorgeous soul of hers and she shared her heart generously with everyone around her,” Madchen wrote. “She was such a proud mother. Loved her girls more than anything in the world. I will always love you Peggy. I hope to dance with you again in the stars one day.”

Peggy Lipton has sadly passed away.

The star’s daughters Kidada and Rashida Jones announced in a statement in the Los Angeles Times on Saturday (May 11) that their mother had died. She was 72.

“She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side. We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her,” Peggy‘s daughters say in the statement. “We can’t put all of our feelings into words right now, but we will say: Peggy was and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us.”

Peggy rose to fame in 1968 when she starred in ABC’s hit crime drama The Mod Squad.

After marrying Quincy Jones in 1974, Peggy took a step back from the spotlight to raise their daughters. After their divorce in 1989, Peggy returned to acting starring in Twin Peaks.

Our thoughts are with Peggy‘s loved ones during this time.

Rashida Jones keeps it chic while attending the 2012 Elle Women in Hollywood celebration held at the Four Seasons Hotel on Monday (October 15) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 36-year-old Parks and Recreation actress was joined by her mother Peggy Lipton and The Help stars Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis.
