'Pose' Is Coming to an End With Season 3 - Premiere Date Revealed

Pose is returning for a third and final season.

The Ryan Murphy-created FX series will return on May 2 and the series finale will air on June 6, co-creator Steven Canals confirmed Friday (March 5) on Good Morning America.

“It was a very difficult decision for us to make, but this has been an incredible journey and we have told the story that we wanted to tell the way that we wanted to tell it,” he told GMA.

“Although we know you’ll be sad to see the show go, this season will be filled with all of the love and laughter and tears that you have come to expect from the Evangelista family. I, along with my incredible collaborators, never intended on changing the television landscape. I simply wanted to tell an honest story about family, resilience and love.”

The final season will consist of seven episodes.

In the final season, the year is 1994 and ballroom is a “distant memory” for Blanca (Mj Rodriguez), who is struggling “to balance being a mother with being a present partner to her new love, and her latest role as a nurse’s aide.” Elsewhere, ballroom emcee Pray Tell (Billy Porter) is dealing with “unexpected health burdens” while, in the ballroom scene, a “vicious new upstart house forces the House of Evangelista members to contend with their legacy.”

The show premiered in June of 2018 and follows queer and transgender people of color in the ballroom scene of New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

“We got to tell the exact story we wanted, as we wanted to tell it, and I’m incredibly honored and grateful,” Ryan Murphy said in a statement.

There’s a huge Ryan Murphy show in the works right now.

'Pose' Boss Reveals Season Three Will Be Set In The Mid-1990s

Get ready for an all new era with the new season of Pose.

Co-creator Steven Canals spoke to TV Guide about the upcoming season, which starts filming in October and confirmed it will take place in 1994, a four year time jump from 1990 in season two.

“Thematically it’s much of the same — our heroes navigating New York and this time it’s New York of 1994,” he shared. “One big thing is Blanca finds love. A large part of Blanca’s arc for the season is the push and pull of being both a partner and a mom. How do you balance all these multiple roles? Blanca has always been so devoted and focused on her children…She’s finally focusing on her herself and going for her goals in a way we’re really never seen for her.”

Steven adds that the upcoming season will also explore “the ripple effects [of that choice]. How does that then impact her children?”

He also spoke about how the third season will implement coronavirus safety protocols while filming, saying that the writing team was “pretty far along in the season” when the pandemic shut down production, and they’ve had to go back and change things.

“How are we going to do the balls? Do we wait and shoot the balls later in our production cycle when hopefully the restrictions have loosened up some? A lot of it is a question mark and we’re having to figure it out as we go.”

'Pose' Season 3 Will Likely Look Different Because of COVID-19 Restrictions

The third season of the groundbreaking FX series Pose was in the middle of production when the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down.

Now, when things pick up again and the show is allowed to resume filming, you can expect the show to look a little different.

“‘Things like kissing — we will likely forgo those moments,” show creator Steven Canals said in a new interview with Variety. “The place on our show where the biggest impact will be felt will be the ball scenes: Those scenes have 125 to 150 background actors. That’s tricky, because that’s such an important and critical part of our show and the narrative. We’re just, only now, having conversations of ‘Is there a world where we forgo these things?’”

Those that watch the series will know that that ballroom scenes are an integral part of the show, so hopefully they’ll be able to work it into the program somehow!

The show’s star Billy Porter spoke up for the black LGBTQ+ community in a new video on Instagram.

Indya Moore Opens Up About Finding Strength in Vulnerability

Indya Moore is on the cover of AnOther Magazine, out on September 12.

Here’s what the 24-year-old Pose star had to say…

On the strength in vulnerability: “I hope that there isn’t a bracket on what I’m able to be vulnerable about. It’s not fair for people to expect me not to share the very real contemplations that I have about my experiences as a marginalised person, belonging to the history that I do…being able to share your most intimate truths is a strength, knowing the risk that comes with being vulnerable. The risk of being judged, the risk of being exploited. Choosing to be vulnerable while being aware that your vulnerability can be exploited is a strength.”

On staying true: “It’s a tough place to be and maintain who you are without being controlled by all the powers that be who want to use you to sell.”

On Pose: Pose is revolutionary because it’s giving people an insight [into the] experiences of people they’ve never met before, right on their living-room screens. When you see yourself in someone who is not you, you see your experience being represented in a body that is not yours, that looks nothing like you, that is what stimulates empathy. You’re able to empathise with an experience you may not have had any proximity to…people seeing us in the same spaces that they see themselves in ‘un-others’ us.”

During a recent interview, Billy revealed why he has a hard time watching recent love scene on the show.

“Making love, sex is the most vulnerable of places that a human can be in with another person,” Billy shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “As an actor, to share what that personally looks like to you, it’s new. It’s very vulnerable. It was hard for me to watch because it was actually very real. That’s something that’s very private.

On the August 6th episode, Billy‘s character Pray Tell sleeps with Ricky (Dyllon Burnside) after they begin a romantic relationship after they bond over their HIV positive status.

“It’s a private moment that I feel like I have now cracked open and begun to share in how I tell stories now,” Billy continued. “And I’m excited that people get to see this human being, this archetype, this African American out, gay, powerful, man.”

New episodes of Pose air on Tuesday nights at 10pm ET on FX.

FYI: Billy is wearing a Joseph Abboud vest and trousers.
