Here's Why The Rockettes Didn't Do Their Classic Kick Line During the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Rockettes are going viral on social media – but it’s because of something they didn’t do!

The legendary dance troupe performed during the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday (November 26) in New York City. However, a frenzy soon kicked off on social media once viewers realized they never did their classic kick line!

The reason, as New York Times pointed out earlier in the week, is due to social distancing amid the pandemic.

“18 of the 80 Rockettes will appear in their wooden soldiers costume with custom-made masks. (That particular Rockettes number was chosen because the dancers have limited contact with one another, which means no kickline.),” the outlet reported.

Many viewers likely did not know about that decision ahead of the parade, and reacted strongly on social media.

“The @Rockettes didn’t do their legendary kicks so I….Very precise. Beautiful costumes. #MacysParade,” wrote April Reign.

“Leave it to the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to have the world famous kicking line of the @Rockettes, not kick during their performance. The year that keeps ruining everything. Hysterical,” added another user.

Still, plenty of social media users praised the performance and pointed out that they still pulled out a fantastic performance given the circumstances.

“The Rockettes were amazing! I know they didn’t do the famous kick line, but the drill was PERFECTLY done and incredibly difficult!!” added NBC’s JC Monahan.

The Rockettes have promised a kickline for an upcoming performance though.

“Thank you for all the love for our Wooden Soldier routine at #MacysParade! If you’re excited for a kickline, tune in to @nbc’s tree lighting Dec. 2 for a special Rockette kickline for fans at home!” they tweeted.

Rockettes' Inauguration Performance is 'Voluntary,' Slots Already Filled Up

The news that the Rockettes will be performing at Donald Trump‘s presidential inauguration drew criticism for the organization and also for the dancers that would be involved.

Reports surfaced that the dancers were going to be forced into performing if they wished to hold their full-time job status with Radio City.

Now, the Madison Square Garden Company has released a statement saying that it was voluntary for the ladies to participate, but they received an overwhelming response to be involved with the performance.

Rockettes Are 'Obligated' to Perform at Inauguration Per Their Contracts

It was announced this week that the Radio City Rockettes will be performing at Donald Trump‘s presidential inauguration next month and now new details reveal that the dancers are “obligated” to perform per their contracts.

Some of the Rockettes have reportedly expressed that they do not want to perform at the event as they don’t support Trump, but the dancers have been told they’re not allowed to boycott.

“It is a job, and all of you should consider it an honor, no matter who is being sworn in. The election is over and this country will not survive if it remains divided. Everyone is entitled to her own political beliefs, but there is no room for this in the workplace,” the dancers were told in an email from the American Guild of Variety Artists, according to BroadwayWorld.com.

“If you are not full time, you do not have to sign up to do this work. If you are full time, you are obligated. Doing the best performance to reflect an American Institution which has been here for over 90 years is your job. I hope this pulls into focus the bottom line on this work,” the email added.
