Producer Scott Rudin Says He'll 'Step Back' from Broadway After Allegations of Workplace Abuse

Scott Rudin, a producer of both movies and Broadway shows, says he will “step back” from his theatrical productions after he was accused of workplace abuse.

The 62-year-old producer is one of just 16 people who have completed the EGOT feat – winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.

Rudin is the winner of 17 Tony Awards and he has received nominations at the awards show nearly every year for the past two decades. Many people in the Broadway community have been calling for action to be taken against him and Tony winner Karen Olivo even decided to quit her musical Moulin Rouge due to the industry’s non-response to the allegations.

Now, Rudin is apologizing for his behavior and saying he’ll step back from Broadway.

Karen Olivo Will Not Return to Broadway in 'Moulin Rouge' in Protest of Scott Rudin

Tony winner Karen Olivo has announced that she will not be returning to the Broadway musical Moulin Rouge when performances resume and it all has to do with Scott Rudin.

The Tony winner is the first Broadway star to take a real stand after allegations were made against the producer.

A bombshell report was released last week and it detailed numerous allegations against Rudin, who is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony-winning producer. His ex-staffers spoke out with allegations of physical and mental abuse while working with the exec.

While Rudin is not involved in Moulin Rouge, Karen says that she is leaving Broadway until the industry properly responds to the allegations and figures out a way to move forward appropriately.

“I could easily go back to the show and make a lot of money, but I still wouldn’t be able to control what I was putting out into the world,” she said in an Instagram video. “And what I’m seeing in this space right now, with our industry, is that everybody is scared, and nobody is really doing a lot of the stuff that needs to be done. People aren’t speaking out.”

Producer Scott Rudin Accused of Bullying & Abuse by Ex-Staffers

Scott Rudin is under fire.

The award-winning The Social Network producer is the subject of an expose on THR on Wednesday (April 7), in which former staffers are speaking out with allegations of physical and mental abuse while working with the Hollywood exec.

The ex-staffers opened up about occasions in which he allegedly threw tantrums, and engaged in behavior seen as abusive.

One ex-staffer alleged he once threw a fit after an assistant failed to book him on a sold-out flight, leading to him smashing an Apple computer monitor on the assistant’s hand, resulting in a bleeding wound that required medical attention. Former assistant Andrew Coles went on record saying several staff members witnessed the incident.

Another staffer, Caroline Rugo, said the producer would allegedly throw things around the office.

“He threw a laptop at the window in the conference room and then went into the kitchen and we could hear him beating on the napkin dispenser. Then another time he threw a glass bowl at [a colleague]. It’s hard to say if he threw it in the general direction or specifically at [the colleague], but the glass bowl hit the wall and smashed everywhere. The HR person left in an ambulance due to a panic attack. That was the environment,” she said.

Producer Scott Rudin Apologizes After Leaked Emails Reveal Racially Charged Remarks About President Obama

Producer Scott Rudin has issued an apology after his leaked Sony emails reveal some very upsetting quotes about President Obama and his presumed favorite movies, which are racially charged.

The emails between Sony Pictures chair Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin refer to a meeting Amy was about to have with the President.

“Would he like to finance some movies.” Amy said, “I doubt it. Should I ask him if he liked DJANGO?” To which Scott replied, “12 YEARS.” Amy responded with, “Or the butler. Or think like a man? [sic],” which Scott replied “Ride-along. I bet he likes Kevin Hart.”

Scott‘s statement in response to the leak reads, “Private emails between friends and colleagues written in haste and without much thought or sensitivity, even when the content of them is meant to be in jest, can result in offense where none was intended. I made a series of remarks that were meant only to be funny, but in the cold light of day, they are in fact thoughtless and insensitive – and not funny at all. To anybody I’ve offended, I’m profoundly and deeply sorry, and I regret and apologize for any injury they might have caused.” (via Deadline)
