David Beckham: Olympic Torch Handover in Athens

David Beckham suits up for an Olympic promo event on Thursday (May 17) in Athens, Greece.

The 37-year-old soccer star was on hand as Greek officials formally handed over the Olympic torch to organizers for the upcoming London 2012 Summer Games.

The L.A. Galaxy player was introduced as “Sir David Beckham,” which “drew hearty laughs from the Brits, who knew that the former captain of the English national soccer team is not a knight.”

“The crowd in Athens didn’t care,” the Associated Press reports. “There was dead silence when the president of Greece was announced, a splattering of applause for [London Olympics organizing chief Sebastian] Coe, and a roar of cheers for Beckham.”
