'Gods of Egypt' Debuts at $14 Million, 'Deadpool' Wins Weekend
Gerard Butler‘s latest film Gods of Egypt debuted this weekend to $14 million.
The new Lionsgate film was intended to become the studio’s next major film franchise but this weekend’s numbers don’t make a sequel look promising, according to Variety.
The $140 million fantasy epic was beat by Deadpool, which once again took the top spot at the box office, taking in $31.5 million.
It doesn’t look like Lionsgate will lose too much off Gods of Egypt, having taken a 46% production incentive from the Australian government for shooting in the country and greater international pre-sales, making the studio’s exposure on the budget under $10 million.
Taking the third spot was Kung Fu Panda 3, bringing in $9 million, for a domestic total of $128.4 million.
Rounding out the top five were Risen and Eddie the Eagle, which grossed $7 million and $6.3 million, respectively.
