Just after Normani and Val started their quickstep, I thought, “Uh-oh…too much running and not enough ‘light and shade.’” It’s funny how some pros keep making the same mistakes. Derek Hough often breaks the rules of a particular dance. Mark Ballas has the tendency to let his often over-the-top creativity dominate the dance. And Val, with his ballroom background, knows very well that Len loves to see contrast in dances like the quickstep and intensely dislikes a dance to be “hectic.” But that’s what we got last night; and as a result, lower scores. The trophy is now Normani’s to lose. As for the freestyles, well, sure David and LIndsay’s was a lot of fun to watch, but, Lindsay knows the poor guy can’t really dance that well; so a fun tribute to his fans with as little actual dancing as possible was the way to go. Rashad went the route that so many other frestyles have gone: hip-hop style–entertaining but nothing new. Some have criticized Val for eschewing the throw-in-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach that other pros like Derek Hough have chosen to embrace, but here’s the thing: Val knows when he’s got a winner–someone who really can dance. And he did what he often does in a freestyle: he crafted a dance which may not be terribly fun or exhilarating to watch, but you know you’re watching a true dancer when you watch and appreciate it. I still say she’s the best dancer of the season and should win the trophy, but this season, hey, anything goes, right?
