The Olympics Have Been Delayed & Cancelled Only 6 Times Before

Earlier today, it was announced that the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan had been officially postponed for a full year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Summer games were originally set to kick off in July and hosted over 10,000 athletes to showcase their skills among multiple disciplines.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo shared that there would be a one year delay until 2021.

2020 doesn’t mark the first time the Olympics were postponed. There were several times before that they were delayed, and ultimately cancelled due to conflicts of war.

1916 Summer Olympics – Berlin, Germany

The 1916 games were cancelled due to World War I, which wasn’t expected to last so long.

The next time the Olympics would be in Berlin would be 1936, which marked the last time the games were held until the end of World War II.

1940 Summer & Winter Olympics – Tokyo, Japan and Helsinki, Finland; Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

The Summer Games were actually scheduled to take place in Tokyo, but were postponed due to WWII, and then moved to Helsinki, Finland. Later in the year, they were cancelled altogether.

For the Winter games, the city of Sapparo, Japan was the original host. However, WWII and the Second Sino-Japanese War were the causes of the cancellation.

Sapporo eventually hosted the Games in 1972.

1944 Summer & Winter Olympics – London; and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

These games were also cancelled due to World War II. However, Olympics were still honored with many events to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its foundation in Switzerland.

The Winter games were also cancelled because of the war. When they returned, the Olympics were held in the neutral country of Switzerland.

The city of Cortina d’Ampezzo did get to host the games eventually, in 1956.

2020 Summer Olympics – Tokyo, Japan

This is the only year that the Olympics have been delayed due to something other than war.

The coronavirus pandemic has taken over six continents with over 400,000 confirmed cases and 18,000 deaths.
