The stars of the 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet are suing Paramount Pictures for child abuse over the nude scene that was included in the movie.
The lawsuit was filed by Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, who played the title characters in the film and currently share a business manager. The suit alleges that director Franco Zeffirelli assured both of the young actors, who were 15 and 16 at the time, that there would no nudity in the movie. In the final days of filming, he allegedly persuaded them to perform in the nude, saying that the picture would fail if they didn’t.
“What they were told and what went on were two different things,” their business manager said (via Variety). “They trusted Franco. At 16, as actors, they took his lead that he would not violate that trust they had. Franco was their friend, and frankly, at 16, what do they do? There are no options. There was no #MeToo.”
