Roku Will Be the New Streaming Home of Quibi Shows

Roku has struck a deal with Quibi to acquire exclusive global distribution rights to many of the shuttered streaming service’s shows.

The programming will be available for free streaming on Roku devices starting later this year and the shows will feature ad-breaks, just as they did on Quibi’s $5-a-month service.

Among the titles that will be available on Roku will be Anna Kendrick‘s Dummy, Liam Hemsworth‘s Most Dangerous Game, and Chrissy Teigen‘s Chrissy’s Court. There will also be shows featuring Idris Elba, Kevin Hart, Nicole Richie, and Lena Waithe, among others.

It is being reported that Roku paid $100 million for the streaming rights to the Quibi content.

“The most creative and imaginative minds in Hollywood created groundbreaking content for Quibi that exceeded our expectations,” said Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg. “We are thrilled that these stories, from the surreal to the sublime, have found a new home on The Roku Channel.”

While Quibi was designed to watch the shows in short bursts, Roku will focus on the longer experience.

“It’s the same availability of content, the same presentation of content,” Roku VP of Programming Rob Holmes told Deadline. “But as we spent a bunch of time with it, it really works, but they’re just TV episodes. I think their premise was, you have 10 minutes, you would watch it. Our view is, this is TV, someone’s going to spend half an hour or an hour or two hours watching it because it’s just that compelling.” He added, “You don’t usually see content like this for free in streaming.”

Quibi was shut down on December 1, 2020.
