HFPA Responds to Having Zero Black Members for Golden Globes Voting

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has released a statement in response to a recent exposé that revealed the organization has zero Black members.

For those that don’t know, the HFPA is the organization that throws the Golden Globes every year. There are 87 members who get to vote for the awards and none of them are Black journalists.

Everyone was shocked when none of the Best Picture nominees were Black-led films, like One Night in Miami, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Judas and the Black Messiah, or Da 5 Bloods. All four of the movies have been considered Oscar frontrunners.

An article in the Los Angeles Times discussed how the nonprofit organization also pays significant amounts of money to members to serve as offices and on various committees. The article also shed some light on why Emily in Paris might have scored those surprise nominations.

“We are fully committed to ensuring our membership is reflective of the communities around the world who love film, tv and the artists inspiring and educating them,” the HFPA told the Los Angeles Times in a new statement. “We understand that we need to bring in Black members, as well as members from other underrepresented backgrounds, and we will immediately work to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible.”
