Billy Porter Calls Out Vogue for Harry Styles Cover - Here's Why

Billy Porter is calling out Vogue.

The 52-year-old Pose star gave an interview and was asked about Harry Styles and the praise he and the magazine have received for him posing on the cover in a dress.

Specifically speaking about the praise Harry received for breaking gender norms, Billy told The Sunday Times that he was actually “the first one doing it.” Billy has often been seen on red carpets and at events in dresses. He has also publicly spoken about normalizing men wearing dresses.

“I changed the whole game,” Billy added in his interview. “I. Personally. Changed. The. Whole. Game. And that is not ego, that is just fact. I was the first one doing it and now everybody is doing it.”

“I feel like the fashion industry has accepted me because they have to. I’m not necessarily convinced and here is why,” he added. “I created the conversation [about non-binary fashion] and yet Vogue still put Harry Styles, a straight white man, in a dress on their cover for the first time.”

“He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do,” Billy continued. “This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my entire life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars and not be gunned [down]. All he has to do is be white and straight.”
