Thandiwe Newton Reveals She Might Retire From Acting After Her Next Few Projects

Thandiwe Newton is opening up about the time she almost quit acting.

Speaking with IndieWire in a new interview, the 49-year-old actress revealed that it was right after filming God’s Country that she thought about leaving the business.

During her appearance at IndieWire Studio, Thandiwe explained that she’s “49, and I think I’ve been a successful Black actress for many, many years. And it’s been rare for me to have a movie where you follow me for the whole movie.”

“I thought God’s Country was my last film as an actress,” she added. “I was sad that I finally got to do something I really f***ing got my teeth into.”

Coming out this year, God’s Country sees Thandiwe as a grieving college professor who finds her property invaded by mysterious trespassers. When she confronts them, she is drawn into an escalating battle of wills with dire consequences.

Thandiwe went on, explaining that she still does believe that she might be done with acting from here on out.

“A light has gone out,” she shared about working on future projects. “My reasons for doing anything from now on, you know, there’ll be reasons, but this [God’s Country] defines what I want to be as an actress…It’s very painful, as well. I don’t particularly want to give, like I’ve given to God’s Country, every movie. But there was a necessity on this, and a desire.”
