Netflix to Launch Test Feature Prompting Subscribers to Pay Additional Fee for Users Outside Their Households

Netflix is going to try and crack down on people sharing their accounts with friends who don’t live in their households.

The app will now launch a test that will prompt primary account holders to pay an additional fee for users that are accessing the account outside of the household.

The test is only happening in three countries right now – Chila, Costa Rica, an Peru.

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans,” Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix, wrote in a blog post about the experimental test that will be run. “While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

The cost for an extra members in Costa Rica will be $2.99 USD. In Peru it will be 7.9 PEN. And in Chile it will be 2380 CLP.
