Netflix Settles 'The Queens Gambit' Defamation Lawsuit

Netflix has settled the $5 million defamation lawsuit brought by chess champion Nona Gaprindashvili, although terms were not disclosed.

A judge in January 2022 rejected Netflix’s attempt to have the lawsuit dismissed after the streamer argued it was protected under the First Amendment.

Nona Gaprindashvili is the fifth women’s world chess champion and the first female player ever to gain the “general” grandmaster title. Anya Taylor Joy plays Beth Harmon, a fictional American who becomes an international chess champion.

The Queen’s Gambit has won two Golden Globes and eleven Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
