Constance Wu Felt Betrayed by the Asian-American Community After Simu Liu's Joke

Constance Wu has opened up about what happened that made her feel betrayed by the Asian-American community.

The 40-year-old Fresh off the Boat actress was at Character Media’s annual Unforgettable Gala, when host Simu Liu made a joke about her after she was assured that she wouldn’t be mocked for her controversial 2019 tweets.

“They promised me,” Constance told Red Table Talk. “They said, ‘No, no, no, no. We love Constance. It’ll only be warm energy and positive vibes towards her.’”

“I was sitting there alone, trying not to cry in a public setting, and the whole audience was like, ‘Oh, sh*t!’” Constance said. “They had promised they wouldn’t mock me and they did it right off the bat. It almost felt like they were setting me up for it. And it truly felt like a betrayal from the Asian American community. A couple months prior to that, I was in the emergency room.”

She went on to say that Simu, the 33-year-old Shang Chi actor, “did the right thing and he apologized, and it was a sincere apology.”

Constance has more recently explained her 2019 tweets in the context of sexual harassment and abuse while working on Fresh off the Boat.
