9. Chris and Kevin confided in each other about their sexuality but had very different experiences
Kevin said that he and Chris used to chat on AIM, an old messaging system.
“Back then, I think being a young gay kid, chat rooms were a big thing to find people in a safe way. No one knows you, it’s fine the kids at school aren’t going to find out … hopefully,” he said. “And you and I sort of confided in each other. I don’t remember how early that happened either.”
“I remember I was in my first apartment,” Chris added.
“I don’t know if we like named it,” Kevin explained about their conversations. “It wasn’t like we were like ‘You gay?’ ‘You gay?’ It wasn’t like that. It was more like … Talking about ‘Oh yeah, I think I like boys.’ Or ‘I’ve hooked up with a guy before.’ Or the exchange of information about our experience levels.”
“It was a slow unravel,” Chris agreed.
Kevin also recalled wanting to be there for Chris in case he wanted to talk about his sexuality.
“Becuase it was scary to tell people,” he said. “I was like I feel like we need to have some sort of trust within eachother and if he feels that he needs to talk to somebody I would be so happy to be the person.”
Later, Chris revealed that he felt resentful in a way of Kevin since he didn’t have to come out for his role in the same way Kurt made him.
“At the time there was sort of this underground gay world in the industry that I just didn’t get to participate in,” he said. “I would go somewhere, and I would be pulled out of photos by publicists and agents because they did not want their clients taking a photo with me because they did not want rumors to start.
“I also envied you in a lot of ways,” Kevin said. “Because I didn’t know how or if I ever would do that.”
However, it also made him question if he would ever come out: “Once I saw the s-it you went through I was like ‘No one’s ever going to know that,'” he said.
