Johnny Depp's Lawyers Release Statement on Amber Heard Settlement

News broke today that Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have settled their court case.

Johnny originally filed the defamation lawsuit against Amber back in 2019. His original filing was for $50 million in damages after she published a 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post that said she became a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Amber never mentioned Johnny by name in the piece, but his lawyers argued that it was about him. Johnny has continually denied all allegations of domestic abuse.

The jury ultimately decided that Amber did defame him on all three counts against her with her 2018 op-ed. They awarded compensatory damages to Johnny and ordered Amber to pay $15 million in damages ($10 million in compensatory damages, plus $5 million in punitive damages). The jury did find Johnny guilty on one count out of three in Amber‘s countersuit against him and was ordered to pay $2 million.

Johnny‘s lawyers, Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew, said, (via TMZ), “We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who made clear throughout this process his intent to bring the truth to light.”

The statement added, “This was never about the money. The jury’s unanimous decision and the judgment in his favor against Ms. Heard remain fully in place, and the payment of $1M reinforces her acknowledgment of the legal system’s rigorous pursuit for justice.”

A source close to Mr. Depp added that Johnny will be making a pledge to several different charities with the one million dollars he receives from Amber. The source also shared that the judge’s decision can still be used against Amber if she were to repeat any defamatory allegations towards him, and the judge’s judgement still stands today.

Amber Heard released a very lengthy statement explaining why she decided to settle and not pursue another trial.
