Afton Williamson Responds After 'The Rookie' Allegations Are Dismissed

Afton Williamson is speaking out in response to the findings from an investigation into the allegations she made against co-workers on ABC’s The Rookie.

The 34-year-old actress previously made claims of sexual harassment and racial discrimination against multiple people she worked with on the show.

Entertainment One, the studio that produces the show, conducted an investigation and found that there was no “unlawful” conduct and that no one demonstrated “behavior inappropriate for the workplace” on set.

“What saddens me the most is that the lengths that were taken to Deceive, Lie, and Cover Up the Truth, were far greater than those made to Protect and Maintain a Safe Working Environment for Employees. It’s Heartbreaking for everyone on that set; Past and Present. And for every Actor out there who Stands in the Face Of Harassment and Discrimination, Assault and Injustice,” Afton wrote on Instagram. “As a Black Woman, an Artist, an Actor, in 2019. My Speaking the Truth, Standing up for myself, and Leaving an Unsafe Work Environment, Changed things for a lot of people: Black Women, Artists, Actors, Victims, and Survivors of Injustice and Discrimination.”

“My prayer is that we get to a point in this Industry where we don’t just Talk about it in 2 hour Mandatory Meetings. But we adhere to Keeping the Promises Made to Everyone on every set, Tirelessly Fulfilling their Dreams with Passion and Dedication,” she added. “In order to Be the Change, I want to see, I will Continue to Work so that Casts & Crews alike finally See Words Align With Action. We’ve got to Do Better as an Industry. It’s just Talk until you actually Do Something.”

The Rookie's Afton Williamson's Claims Were Investigated & No 'Unlawful' Conduct Found

Afton Williamson announced over the summer that she would not be returning to season two of The Rookie and she made claims of discrimination and sexual assault against multiple members of the show’s staff.

Entertainment One, the studio that produces the ABC series, completed an investigation into the allegations, which was conducted by a third party law firm.

“We have concluded that those identified in Ms. Williamson’s allegations did not conduct themselves in an unlawful manner or demonstrate behavior inappropriate for the workplace. It was also concluded that the executive producers, including showrunner Alexi Hawley, addressed matters of which they were made aware promptly and in a fair and reasonable manner,” eOne said in a statement (via THR).

“We take all allegations of inappropriate conduct very seriously, particularly when the allegations involve discrimination or sexual harassment of any nature,” the statement continued. “We appreciate the cooperation of all those who were interviewed, including Ms. Williamson, the individuals she identified by name, and several other relevant production and staff members.”

“We recognize and respect that as individuals, the lens through which we view situations, interactions and comments, can differ based on our experiences and perspectives. As such, we regret that Ms. Williamson’s time on the series was not a positive one for her, and we respect her decision to move on to other projects,” the statement concluded.

Afton Williamson is identifying the people who sexually harassed and discriminated against her on the set of The Rookie.

Over the weekend, the 34-year-old actress explained her unfortunate experience on the show in an Instagram post, where she described discrimination in the hair department, bullying from executive producers and sexual harassment from a guest star.

Although she did not originally reveal those who harassed her, she is now speaking out with their names.

“This season on The Rookie, I was sexually harassed by fellow actor Demetrius Grosse. I was Racially Bullied and Discriminated against and Sexually Assaulted by Hair Department Head Sally Nicole Ciganovich,” Afton wrote on her Instagram.

She also included a thank you to those who have supported her, writing, “To my Fans, my Friends, my Supporters: I want to Thank EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU. I am so beyond overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, kind words, scriptures, strength filled quotes and devout support that has come my way.”

Afton added, “It is through this experience and my platform that God pushed me to use the power within me. It just takes a VOICE. I never imagined so many of us have experienced these horrible circumstances and that can NO LONGER GO UNHEARD. We have a voice. ALL OF US. It is our DUTY to use it.”

ABC Responds to Allegations Made By The Rookie's Afton Williamson After Her Exit From Series

Afton Williamson announced this weekend that she would be leaving The Rookie ahead of season two amid allegations of racial discrimination, sexual assault and harassment.

Now, ABC is responding directly to Afton‘s lengthy statement detailing what happened.

“I am frustrated, I don’t have a lot of answers; I wish I had more. I heard at the end of June that there were allegations and an investigation has been launched. We are waiting for answers… As soon as we learn more, we will make determination based on what’s found,” ABC’s Entertainment President Karey Burke said in a statement at the network’s TCA.

Burke added that the third-party investigation will offer “results that are independent and trustworthy” that “will guide us how to handle similar situations in the future.”

The Rookie's Afton Williamson Won't Return for Season 2 Due to Allegations of Discrimination & Sexual Assault

Afton Williamson will not be returning for season two of The Rookie, and she is explaining why in a lengthy Instagram post.

“I will not be returning for Season 2 of The Rookie. I owe it to you my amazing fans to share the Truth. Throughout the filming of the pilot, I experienced Racial Discrimination/Racially Charged inappropriate comments from the hair department and bullying from Executive Producers. During the Season, it continued along with Sexual Harassment from a recurring guest star and the racist commentary & bullying from the Hair Dept Head escalated into Sexual Assault at our Wrap party. The Sexual Harassment though reported directly to the Showrunner/EP remained undocumented and was not reported to HR as promised,” Afton, 34, posted on Instagram.

Afton continued, “The Hair Dept. Head was fired ONLY after the sexual assault and NOT for an entire year of outward racism/racially charged language and bullying behavior in and out of the Hair and Makeup trailer. HR protocol was never adhered to following the above reports given by me to my Showrunner/EP and an investigation was never issued for any of my claims.”

She added, “The only time I was asked to participate in an investigation was after a meeting I called in June following our Season 2 announcement. This meeting included the Showrunner and two other producers as well as my agent and SAG-AFTRA Union Rep. It was clear to all present in the meeting that the Showrunner had not shared my reports with the any of the producers. After my initial report of sexual harassment, I was assured that the actor would be fired. I was also asked to film with him the very next day as a courtesy to the script, even though we had not begun filming the episode yet. This actor reappeared on our call sheet at the end of the season, I was even written in scenes with him.”

“I asked the Showrunner about this and he admitted to me that the actor had not been fired nor had he gotten HR involved. I was asked to return this season, and promised that ‘everything was handled.’ The investigation hadn’t even begun and Season 2 had already started filming,” Afton continued. “I turned it down and I walked. Now is the best time in the world to be a woman and I have a platform so it’s time to use my Voice. Strength comes from within. It comes from Above. ‘Greater is He that is within Me than he that is in the world.’”

On the show, Afton Williamson Talia Bishop, the training officer for John Nolan (played by Nathan Fillion).

Afton stepped out with her co-stars back in May, just before the June meeting she spoke about in her post. Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter also star.
