Dolly Parton is opening up about her marriage to husband Carl Thomas Dean.
In a new interview, the 76-year-old country music icon shared some rare insight into her 56-year marriage, revealing their secret to their long-lasting union.

Dolly Parton is speaking to the rumors that her husband of 54 years, Carl Dean, does not exist.
“A lot of people have thought that through the years, because he does not want to be in the spotlight at all,” Dolly told ET. “It’s just not who he is. He’s like, a quiet, reserved person and he figured if he ever got out there in that, he’d never get a minute’s peace and he’s right about that.”
Dolly and Carl married in 1966 and he has never been part of the spotlight and very few photos of them together have been made public.
“I’ve always respected and appreciated that in him and I’ve always tried to keep him out of the limelight as much as I can,” she added. “He said, ‘I didn’t choose this world, I chose you, and you chose that world. But we can keep our lives separate and together.’ And we do and we have. We’ve been together 56 years, married 54.”
“Our joke about the fact, when people ask me why it’s lasted this long, I say, ‘Because I stay gone.’ And there’s a lot of truth in that — the fact that we’re not in each other’s faces all the time,” Dolly continued. “But we do have a great respect and admiration for each other. We both have a great sense of humor. So, we have a lot of fun.”

If you missed it, Dolly told the Tonight Show audience that, “My husband is crazy about [Jennifer Aniston], and he was more excited that I was going to do a movie with her than he was that I got the chance to write all this music. I think he fantasizes, like, a threesome.”
Luckily, Jennifer thought it was “hilarious.” Dolly wrote the music for Jennifer‘s upcoming Netflix film Dumplin’.
“My mouth just dropped. And then I laughed my (butt) off. That’s Dolly,“ Jennifer told USA Today. “It was hilarious, I think it’s flattering. And that’s Dolly‘s sense of humor. Mo one in the world can get away with saying anything like that about their partner on live television, except Dolly. I mean, that is a quote.”

The legendary 72-year-old musician spoke about her marriage in a People cover story, published on Friday (November 23).
“I’ve been married for 53 years come next May, and my husband and I have a great relationship. We’ve been together most of our lives,” she said.
Carl never appears at public events with Dolly, and largely stays out of the spotlight.
“I always joke and laugh when people ask me what’s the key to my long marriage and lasting love. I always say ‘Stay gone!’ and there’s a lot of truth to that. I travel a lot, but we really enjoy each other when we’re together and the little things we do,” she explains.
“He knows I’m always going to kind of be fixed up for him because I don’t believe in going home and being a slouch…he doesn’t care what I wear as long as I’m happy. He loves me the way I am.”
She also opened up about their vow renewal ceremony on their 50th anniversary two years ago in Nashville, Tenn.
“I never really felt like I had the wedding that we really wanted. He got all dressed up and I got all dressed up. Fifty years is a long time for anything, and I felt that we needed to do something to commemorate this. It’s been a good 50 years and I don’t know how many more years we’ll have left.”
