Prey's Amber Midthunder Reveals How Important It Was To Have The Film Dubbed in Comanche

Amber Midthunder gets sandwiched between co-stars Dakota Beavers and Dane DiLiegro at the Prey screening at Beyond Fest held at Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Calif, on Thursday (August 4).

The 25-year-old actress, who was also joined by boyfriend River Thomas, spoke on stage at the event ahead of the screening of the new movie, which is available to stream now on Hulu.

Speaking with Variety at the premiere a few days earlier, Amber opened up about having the movie dubbed in Comanche, and how important that it was for the portrayal.

“The movie was originally pitched to shoot it entirely in Comanche. When we auditioned, we did all of our scenes in English and Comanche to make sure we could do it and how it might play,” she said, adding that “Comanche is very special as far as language preservation is concerned.”

Amber then mentioned the movie is also “making history. Never has a movie been released in a Native dub upon original release.”

“I think it’s a huge victory and a huge thing that we can claim as a people, and just for me to get familiar with the Comanche language — it’s not at all like the language I grew up [with] — it felt to me like a personal gift to get so closely acquainted with the culture and the language as well.”

'Prey's Amber Midthunder Calls 'Predator' Prequel Groundbreaking for Indigenous Representation

Amber Midthunder wears a chic floral halter gown for the premiere of her new film, Prey.

The 25-year-old actress walked the red carpet at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on Tuesday (August 2) next to her co-stars Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, and Dane DiLiegro, as well as director Dan Trachtenberg.

Jack Quaid, Doug Jones, and Paula Abdul were among the celebrity guests at the event.

“Just the way that the characters are built and portrayed, especially in a period piece, is something that you so rarely see for Indigenous characters,” Amber shared in a new interview about the flick.

She added, “Often, you think Native characters are either overly spiritual or they’re just really savage and kind of subhuman and one-dimensional, and you never get to see a variety of Native people who have full personalities and desires, and things to relate to, and relationships. On top of being a really exciting movie, I’m extremely proud of that.”

The newest installment of the Predator franchise, Prey is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago.

It follows Naru (Midthunder), a fierce and highly skilled warrior, who has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people.
