Dylann Roof Sentenced to Death for Charleston Church Murders

Dylann Roof, who killed nine people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina back in 2015, has been sentenced to death by a federal jury.

The jury found Roof guilty on 33 counts for the attack and they came to the verdict for the death penalty after three hours of deliberations, according to the New York Times.

Roof says that he still feels like he had to commit the murders.

“In my confession to the FBI I told them that I had to do it, and obviously that’s not really true… I didn’t have to do anything,” he said during the closing argument. “But what I meant when I said that was, I felt like I had to do it, and I still do feel like I had to do it.”

Jon Stewart Covers Charleston Shooting, Tells No Jokes (Video)

Jon Stewart gave an amazing speech to cover the Charleston church shooting during one of his final episodes of The Daily Show on Thursday night (June 18).

The 52-year-old comedian didn’t write any jokes for his opening monologue and said he was filled with “just sadness.”

“I didn’t do my job today, because of what happened in South Carolina,” Jon started off saying. “Maybe if I wasn’t nearing the end of the run or this wasn’t such a common occurrence, maybe I could have pulled out of the spiral, but I didn’t. I honestly have nothing other than just sadness.”

“If this had been what we thought was Islamic terrorism…it’s ‘we’ve got to do whatever we can — we’ll torture people! — we’ve got to do whatever we can to keep Americans safe.’ Nine people shot in a church, what about that? ‘Hey, what are you gonna do, crazy is as crazy does.’ That’s the part that I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around,” Jon said to compare the shooting to terrorism.

President Obama on Charleston Church Shooting: 'I’ve Had To Make Statements Like This Too Many Times'

President Barack Obama addressed the nation about the fatal shootings of nine people at Emaunel AME Church on Thursday (June 18) from the press room of The White House in Washington D.C.

The 53-year-old Commander in Chief spoke about the horrific shooting and subsequent hate crime investigation.

“This morning I spoke with, and Vice President Biden spoke with, Mayor Joe Riley and other leaders of Charleston to express our deep sorrow over the senseless murders that took place last night,” he said. “Michelle and I know several members of the AME church, we knew their pastor, Clementa Pinckney…To say our thoughts and prayers are with them and their community doesn’t say enough to convey the heartache and the sadness and the anger that we feel.”

He continued, “I don’t need to be constrained about the emotions that tragedies like these raise. I’ve had to make statements like this too many times. Communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times. We don’t have all the facts but we know innocent people were killed because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun.”
