Sean Penn Says His El Chapo Meeting Was a 'Failure' (Video)

Sean Penn ducks his head into a car while leaving Giorgio Baldi after dinner on Thursday night (January 14) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The following morning, CBS This Morning aired an excerpt from the 55-year-old actor’s 60 Minutes interview about his famous meeting with Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

“Let me be clear. My article has failed,” Sean told Charlie Rose about his meeting and subsequent Rolling Stone piece. “The entire discussion abut this article ignores its purpose which was to try to contribute to this discussion about the policy to the war on drugs.”

Sean also said that his meeting did not lead to El Chapo‘s capture.

“There is this myth about the visit that we made, my colleagues and I with El Chapo, that it was – as the Attorney General of Mexico is quoted – ‘essential’ to his capture,” Sean said. “We had met with him many weeks earlier … on October 2nd, in a place nowhere near where he was captured.”

Sean Penn on El Chapo Meeting: 'I've Got Nothin' to Hide'

Sean Penn is speaking out in a brief statement about his interview with the drug lord El Chapo.

The 55-year-old actor published an interview with the criminal, whose real name is Joaquin Guzman Loera, in Rolling Stone on Saturday (January 9), just one day after he was arrested again.

There are questions being raised about whether it was safe for Sean to conduct the interview and why he allowed El Chapo to have final approval over the article, even though he didn’t request to change anything.

“I’ve got nothin’ to hide,” Sean said in an email with the Associated Press (via THR).

Sean Penn Interviews Drug Lord El Chapo - Watch the Video

Just one day after news broke that the drug lord El Chapo has been captured after seven months on the loose, Sean Penn has published the first-ever interview with the criminal.

The 55-year-old actor interviewed the drug lord back in September in Mexico for a Rolling Stone piece and El Chapo (whose real name is Joaquín Guzmán Loera) was given final approval on the article, though he did not ask for any changes.

In the interview, Guzman said that he began this way of life when he was 15 and he openly boasted about his business.

“I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world. I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats,” he said. When asked about the violence in the business, he said, “Look, all I do is defend myself, nothing more. But do I start trouble? Never.”

Guzman wanted to know about about Hollywood and it has been reported that he wanted to make a documentary about himself.

“He is interested in the movie business and how it works,” Sean said in the article. “He’s unimpressed with its financial yield. The P&L high side doesn’t add up to the downside risk for him. He suggests to us that we consider switching our career paths to the oil business.”

Donald Trump was even discussed. There were rumors that El Chapo had put a $100 million bounty on the presidential candidate’s head. “I mention Trump. El Chapo smiles, ironically saying, ‘Ah! Mi amigo!’” the actor wrote.
