Basketball Stars Giannis Antetokounmpo, Zion Williamson & Blake Griffin Donate Wages To Arena Employees After NBA Season Suspension

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Zion Williamson and Blake Griffin are just three of the basketball stars giving back big time during the coronavirus pandemic.

Just days after the NBA suspended the season, it was revealed that thousands of workers would be out a job because of that.

However, Blake, Zion, Giannis and more are donating their money to those who are missing out on the pay they would’ve otherwise made.

“It’s bigger than basketball! And during this tough time I want to help the people that make my life, my family’s lives and my teammates lives easier. Me and my family pledge to donate $100,000 to the Fiserv Forum staff. We can get through this together!” Milwaukee Bucks player Giannis shared on Twitter.

Zion, who plays for the New Orleans Pelicans, shared on Instagram: “These are the folks who make our games possible, creating the perfect environment for our fans and everyone involved in the organization. This is a small way for me to express my support and appreciation for these wonderful people who have been so great to me and my teammates and hopefully we can all join together to relieve some of the stress and hardship caused by this national health crisis.”

Blake committed to donate $100,000, and Cleveland Cavaliers player Kevin Love also shared his plans to donate wages.

After the NBA announced the season suspension, Mark Cuban, who owns the Dallas Mavericks, revealed that he has a program in place to financially support the arena workers.

Nike & NBA Star Giannis Antetokounmpo Introduce 'Coming to America'-Inspired Sneaker!

Coming to America is inspiring a new sneaker!

The shoe was inspired by Nike’s collaboration with NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo for his first sneaker, the Zoom Freak 1, and learning more about the player.

Giannis said his favorite movie was the ‘Prince Akeem movie’ … and we were like, ‘What are you talking about?’ “We’re like, ‘Oh…Coming to America.‘ He’s like, ‘Yeah, that’s what you call it here. We don’t call it that. We call it the Prince Akeem movie.’ It kind of inspired us, honestly, on a bigger narrative that was about his journey coming to America,” explained Nike exec Kevin Dodson.

Coming to America, the 1988 cult classic remains an influential centerpiece in the upbringing of Giannis Antetokounmpo. A favorite from his youth, the film draws a glaring parallel between Giannis and Prince Akeem, the character portrayed by comedic icon Eddie Murphy. Akeem journeys from the fictional nation of Zamunda to America on a royal quest to find the woman of his dreams and be his future queen. Similarly, Giannis‘ hoop dreams from the European leagues in Athens, Greece to the greatest stage in the world, the NBA, have made his hopes of international crossover into a reality,” the brand declares.
