Here Are the Biggest Plot Holes From 'Interstellar'

'Interstellar' Writer Really Thinks Humans Need to Leave Earth

The new film Interstellar is now in theaters everywhere and audiences will finally be seeing Christopher Nolan‘s new space travel film.

The movie follows a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Screenwriter Jonathan Nolan chatted with BuzzFeed about the elements of the story and why he thinks humans really need to leave Earth one day.

“There may come a moment when the earth shrugs us off like a dog shrugging off a tick, and that has happened, over and over again,” Jonathan said. “Given the fossil record, one thing you know for sure: At some point, we’re f–ked. Right? At some point, we’re done. And we’ve either, at that point, figured out how to survive elsewhere, or that’s it; that’s the end of the story.”

He then said the Earth is “a place that, ultimately, you have to leave. Take us or leave us, we’re the only game in town, in terms of life. Right here. If that matters to you, on any level, then we need to get the f–k outta here.”

Jonathan was asked when and he answered, “Well, now.”

Interstellar's Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, & Anne Hathaway Go Galactic For New 'THR' Cover

Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway get in for a group shot with director Christopher Nolan while promoting their new movie Interstellar on the latest cover of The Hollywood Reporter.

Here’s what the trio of actors had to share with the mag about whether the film changed any of their feelings, philosophically or religiously:

Matthew: It opened my view a little bit. My views of what’s out there expanded for me after doing this film called Contact [1997]. Carl Sagan: to hear him speak for four hours. I’ve always been someone who didn’t go to see sci-fi films; I didn’t read sci-fi books as a child. And my thoughts were always [about] what’s tangible, what we have right here, maybe what’s beneath the sea, but I was never looking out there. That always was sort of an unknown. “Oh, don’t worry about that; it’s not attainable.”

Anne: I think [this] affirmed certain things about the interconnectivity of things. About trusting others and the meaning behind things, even if it doesn’t make sense, even if it hurts. Over the long, infinite arc of time, things tend to happen as they should and they usually find their place, their slot.

Jessica: It also coincided with this idea that I believe that we’re all connected. Not just in this moment but in every moment. So as I was wrapping my head around the science of the film, I was incredibly moved by the human component of the film, and definitely it coincided with my spiritual beliefs.
