Zendaya‘s new movie Malcolm & Marie is currently the number one movie on Netflix and she’s opening up about the decision to film it in black and white.

The entire movie features just two actors, her and John David Washington, and they filmed it right at the beginning of the pandemic while quarantining with the entire crew.

Zendaya opened up about writer and director Sam Levinson‘s black and white choice while being interviewed on GMA this week.

“Well, you know, other than the fact that it’s just pretty, it’s beautiful, it adds timelessness to it, but also… there was a thought also about reclaiming the narrative of black and white Hollywood and Black actors really having their moment at that time,” Zendaya said.

“We weren’t as present in the black and white era,” she continued. “A lot of filmmakers have already done this before, a lot of Black filmmakers, so it’s not necessarily a new idea, but we did want to pay tribute to that era and reclaim that beauty and that elegance with these two Black actors.”

Zendaya‘s new movie Malcolm & Marie was just released on Netflix and while posting about the film, she revealed that she spells her character’s name differently.

“On behalf of our little crew of 22, we hope you laugh (please laugh lol) and cry and hopefully enjoy this little thing we made with a whole lot of love,” she said in the Instagram post.

The 24-year-old actress wrote a note to fans and signed it by saying, “Love Maree (I spell mine with two E’s).”

John David Washington is addressing some backlash.

The 36-year-old actor stars opposite 24-year-old Zendaya, who plays his girlfriend in the upcoming Sam Levinson relationship drama Malcolm & Marie, which resulted in some criticism upon the debut of the trailer.

John reacted to the criticism during an interview with Variety.

“I wasn’t concerned about it because she is a woman. People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is. She has far more experience than I do in the industry. I’ve only been in it for seven years. She’s been in it longer, so I’m learning from her. I’m the rookie,” he said.

“I was leaning on her for a lot. Some of the stories she’s shared about what she’s had to go through with Twitter and everything. I appreciated her wisdom and discernment when it comes to this business. I admire that. What I’m really excited for people to see when the film is released – they’re going to see how mature she is in this role, We’re talking about versatility, and Sam and Zendaya brought both.”

The two co-stars could make Oscars history in more than one way with their performance.

The movie was written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and it was made in secret during June and July 2020. All proper protocols were followed to keep everyone safe during the pandemic and the cast only features the two stars!

Zendaya recently chatted about how they were able to accomplish the feat at a time when most film and TV shoots were still shut down.

Malcolm & Marie follows a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) who return home following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.

The movie will be released on Netflix on February 5.

There’s one month left until the release of Zendaya‘s new Netflix movie Malcolm & Marie and she’s opening up about how the film was made in secret at the beginning of the pandemic.

The film was announced publicly in July 2020 after being filmed from June 17 to July 2.

Malcolm & Marie is a two-person film that takes place in one location. The movie follows a filmmaker (John David Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) as they return home from his movie premiere and wait for the reviews to come in. Smoldering tensions and painful revelations push them toward a romantic reckoning.

Sam Levinson, the creator of Zendaya‘s HBO series Euphoria, wrote and directed the movie.

“We got this idea that we could do a movie in quarantine safely with a very small number of people,” Zendaya told Elle about the film. “We used some crew members from Euphoria who obviously didn’t have a job because filming had stopped. I was fascinated with this idea of shooting a film with just two characters. It was like a play. It was challenging for all of us, because it was shot in just one space. Being quarantined together was great in some ways, because it allowed us to workshop and really dig into the material while we were there.”

On Pharrell‘s new podcast, she added, “We made a bubble. We all quarantined and stayed in this very small area in the middle of nowhere. We shot in this house… we weren’t allowed to leave or go anywhere.”

“I’m doing my own hair and makeup in the bathroom and brought a lot of my clothes to help with set [decoration],” Zendaya said (via Page Six).

She also added that there was no assistant director on the project, “so we’re figuring out continuity and stuff like that on our own.”

Zendaya is being considered a Best Actress frontrunner for the upcoming Oscars! The movie is being released on Netflix on February 5.
