Matthew Fox shows off his colorful tattoos on the cover of the December 2012 issue of Men’s Health UK, on newsstands October 29.

Here’s what the 46-year-old actor had to share:

On the motivation for his extreme weight loss for his new film Alex Cross: “When I read the part, it felt immediately that my character [serial killer Picasso] is burning energy on almost a hyper level. Without needing to spend any time in the gym he would just look like that. Almost disturbingly vascular and tendony, and fucking just… weird. That would come from an enormous amount of energy burning inside this guy.”

On shedding nearly a fifth of his bodyweight the healthy way: “I didn’t want to lose weight unhealthily, but I didn’t know how to do it any other way. I read somewhere that when Christian Bale was preparing for The Machinist he ate nothing but an apple a day for months. Just one apple. That can’t be good for you.”

On his hardcore fat-stripping for big scenes: “I lost around 20kg altogether. And as you can imagine, the dieting was difficult because I love to eat. As we moved closer to the movie I started eating less. There were certain scenes in the film where for a week or 10 days beforehand it was really hardcore. I was only eating chicken breasts, steamed broccoli and protein shakes made with water. That was brutal.”

Matthew Fox flashes a smile during his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Wednesday (October 17).

The 46-year-old actor chatted with Ellen about his turbulent year that included false allegations of hitting a woman and a DUI.

“I was not happy about the DUI at all. I was terribly embarrassed by that. And take full responsibility for it. I really own that and have done every single thing the state of Oregon requires for a first time DUI offender. I have learned a ton,” Matthew shared. “I did four weeks of alcohol informational training. And just learned an enormous amount. One of the statistics that I learned is that 50% of people that get one DUI will get another. I found that pretty astounding after what I’ve been through. I will absolutely not be in the statistic. There is just no way.”

Matthew Fox suits up for his October/November 2012 spread for Da Man magazine.

Here’s what the 46-year-old actor had to share with the mag:

On his previous hit show Lost: “It was a great experience and a really wonderful chapter in our lives. It was also really wonderful for our two young children, who aren’t so young anymore. We really enjoyed the six years that we spent there. Working on the show was fantastic. I really enjoyed the story and the character that I played on the show. I thought that I was given a really good opportunity to work on a role that was very complex, which gave me the chance to do a lot of different things. It was a fantastic experience all around.”

On preparing for his upcoming film Alex Cross: “I lost 35 pounds, which was difficult, but I had really expert help. I met a man in London who had done this for several people – helping them radically change their look for a specific role. We got together and he asked me what I imagined the character looking like. Afterward, he came back with a strategically laid out workout plan that involved us training together on top of a structured nutritional plan. I was very disciplined, I never cheated and I worked really hard on it. Some of the first images that were leaked from the movie made me very happy because I felt like I had re-created the image I had in my mind of what the character would look like.”

On his present state of mind: “I’m a little anxious right now because I’m going to be traveling a lot soon. I have three films coming out over the next eight months, which means a lot of traveling, moving around and doing press while staying in hotels. I’m usually a little anxious about that stuff because it’s always kind of a whirlwind and it takes me away from my family. But at the moment, I could not be happier with where we are now in Oregon, settled into this home that my wife and I spent three years building. We are very happy here and so I’d say I’m in a very good state of mind.”

Matthew Fox was arrested for DUI early Friday morning (May 4) in Oregon, TMZ reports.

The 45-year-old Lost actor – who lives in Bend, Ore., with his family – was busted at 3:23 a.m. on suspicion of driving under the influence.

“Details surrounding the arrest are unclear – but sources tell us, it was alcohol-related,” the website reports. “We’re told Matthew was en route to a fast food restaurant for some late night eats at the time of his arrest.”

The DUI is the latest legal trouble for Matthew, who last year was accused of assaulting a party bus driver.

Matthew Fox is set to star in the political thriller Emperor!

The 45-year-old Lost alum will play a general in the tale inspired by true events.

“Emperor is an epic story of love and understanding set amidst the uncertainties of the days following the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII, when General Douglas MacArthur served as the de facto ruler of Japan as supreme commander of the occupying forces,” Variety reports.

Production will begin at the end of the month – actors will film scenes in both New Zealand and Japan.

“We are thrilled to be working with Matthew Fox who is a fine actor and whose maturity and appeal fits perfectly with our film’s aesthetic,” producer Gary Foster shared.
