Golden Globes 2021 Under Fire For Shutting 'Minari' Out of Best Picture Race

The 2021 Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) are under fire for their choice to include Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari in the Best Foreign Language Film category, shut out from the Best Picture race.

The same thing was done to Lulu Wang’s The Farewell last year.

The film is inspired by Isaac‘s upbringing as the son of Korean immigrants in rural immigrants. Steven Yeun stars as a father who moves his family from Korea to the farmlands of Arkansas in the 1980s to chase the American Dream. Yeri Han, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, and Yuh-Jung Youn also star.

After the news was released, many celebrities came forward to protest this decision.

“I have not seen a more American film than #Minari this year. It’s a story about an immigrant family, IN America, pursuing the American dream. We really need to change these antiquated rules that characterizes American as only English-speaking,” Lulu Wang tweeted.

Daniel Dae Kim posted, “The film equivalent of being told to go back to your country when that country is actually America.”

Simu Liu tweeted, “Just for the record, Minari is an American movie written and directed by an American filmmaker set in America with an American lead actor and produced by an American production company.”

The film has a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes at this time.
