The Broadway revival of the classic musical West Side Story will not return to the stage when Broadway performances resume in the fall.

The producers of the musical have announced that the show has officially closed and will not reopen, as originally planned.

Shereen Pimentel is a rising star in the Broadway community who is currently playing the iconic role of Maria in the revival of West Side Story.

The 21-year-old actress is currently a senior undergraduate soprano student at The Juilliard School in New York City and she’s pulling double duty with her Broadway gig. She’s continuing to attend her classes and keep up with her studies while performing eight shows a week!

Shereen made her Broadway debut when she was only nine-years-old as Young Nala in The Lion King and now she’s make on stage in the hottest show of the year.

We caught up with Shereen to learn more about her. Check out 10 Fun Facts below!

• 1. I didn’t learn how to ride a bike until I was 18. I spent 6 weeks in Germany one summer and the only way to get around was by bicycle. So my aunt and uncle taught me how to ride in a local parking garage.
• 2. I was on my dance team in High School for 2 years.
• 3. I am the only singer to have won my school’s talent show – I sang “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.
• 4. I performed at the Frankfurt Opera House at the age of 18 – I was a guest performer for their studio gala.
• 5. My favorite movie is A Walk to Remember. I’m a hopeless romantic.

Isaac Powell and Shereen Pimentel are picture perfect while posing for photos at the West Side Story opening night after party on Thursday (February 20) at the IAC Building in New York City.

The young actors are playing the iconic roles of Tony and Maria in the latest revival of the classic musical.

Also stepping out for the after party were actors Amar Ramasar and Dharon E. Jones, who play Bernardo and Riff, respectively.

Shereen is currently pulling double duty as a senior undergraduate soprano student at The Juilliard School and she’s going to class each day before performing in the musical. She graduates in May!

West Side Story, which is directed by visionary director Ivo van Hove, has been one of the most highly anticipated shows of the season.

The classic musical West Side Story is coming back to Broadway next month, but it’s going to be a very different version than the one you know.

Director Ivo Van Hove, who won the Tony Award for his recent revival of the play A View From the Bridge and just directed Network on Broadway, is re-imagining the show for the 21st century.

“When I listened to it again, when I read it again, I discovered this very brutal world, a divided world where people search for unity by exclusion of the other—the person who is not like you,” van Hove told Vogue. “It seemed as if it were written yesterday. So that’s our aspiration: to make a West Side Story for the 21st century.”

The show has been trimmed to be performed without an intermission and that means that some songs have been cut. The revival will not feature the “Somewhere” ballet or “I Feel Pretty” and the cuts have been approved by the creators’ estates.

Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the lyrics for the musical’s score, has said he was uncomfortable with some of the lyrics in “I Feel Pretty,” so he likely is okay with the cut too!

West Side Story will star Isaac Powell and newcomer Shereen Pimentel. Preview performances begin on December 10 ahead of an opening night on February 6.
