Julia Roberts & An Unrecognizable Sean Penn Lead Starz' Watergate Scandal Series 'Gaslit'

Starz has just dropped the first teaser for their upcoming Watergate scandal series, Gaslit.

Starring Julia Roberts and an unrecognizable Sean Penn as Martha and John Mitchell, the show will also star Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin and Shea Whigham.

Here’s a summary of the series: Gaslit is a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal – from Nixon’s bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.

The story will center on Martha Mitchell, a big personality with an even bigger mouth. Martha is a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John Mitchell.

Despite her party affiliation, she’s the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate, causing both the Presidency and her personal life to unravel.

Gaslit will premiere on April 24 on Starz.

This isn’t the only Watergate-centered project in the works.

Alicia Von Rittberg Will Play Young Elizabeth I in Starz' 'Becoming Elizabeth'!

Alicia von Rittberg is taking on a big role.

The 26-year-old actress is set to star as young Queen Elizabeth I in Becoming Elizabeth, Starz’s eight-episode drama series, Deadline reported Tuesday (October 27).

The series was created by playwright Anya Reiss. Here’s a plot summary: “Becoming Elizabeth centers on young Elizabeth Tudor (Rittberg), an orphaned teenager who becomes embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court on her journey to secure the crown. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn, who was executed when Elizabeth just two years old. Despite the marriage being annulled and Elizabeth declared illegitimate, after a long journey filled with scheming, betrayal and illicit relationships that threatened to bring forth her demise, Elizabeth ultimately ascended to the throne and ruled for 45 years.”

Alicia previously starred in Fury, Und alle haben geschwiegen and Lotte am Bauhaus as well as TV series Genius: Einstein and Charité.

At the same time, today’s reigning Queen Elizabeth recently came under fire for this.
