The Croods: A New Age is continuing to dominate at the box office.

The animated comedy sequel, which brought in the most revenue over Thanksgiving weekend last week, is once again on top at the box office as of Sunday (December 6) with $4.4 million at 2,205 locations in North America, Variety reported.

Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds all lend their voices to the film. In the movie, the prehistoric family the Croods are challenged by a rival family the Bettermans, who claim to be better and more evolved.

The movie has since brought in $20.3 million in its first twelve days.

“After an opening that topped very modest expectations, Croods is naturally remaining the dominant film in a market operating with less than 40% of theaters open currently. Renewed lockdowns and closures across the country will probably keep exhibition’s hands tied for the remainder for the holidays, even with Wonder Woman 1984 and a few other releases on the horizon to provide open theaters and willing audiences with fresh content,” Shawn Robbins of Box Office Pro said.

The original Croods movie earned $89 million during its first two weekends in 2013.

Warner Bros. recently made a surprising decision regarding the future of their titles in 2021 amid the pandemic.

The family movie surpassed expectations amid the pandemic at the box office and brought in $14.2 million, including $9.7 million for the weekend, across the five-day holiday bracket as of Sunday (November 29), according to THR.

The movie also brought in $20.8 million in seven international markets, leading with $19.2 million in China, resulting in a global debut of $35 million overall.

This is the lowest Thanksgiving box office in decades, however, it still signaled a success: Croods 2 is the first major studio movie to attempt a big screen debut since Tenet, and narrowly came ahead, making it the top debut since the pandemic started.

The movie played to 2,211 theaters amid hundreds of theater reclosures due to the surge of COVID-19.

“This shows that even with a difficult theatrical landscape, people want to come out and get together. The film is incredibly charming,” says Universal’s Jim Orr.

Croods 2 will be available on PVOD in roughly three weeks, in time for Christmas.

In comparison, Frozen 2 brought in over $100 million across the four-day weekend.

Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke, Cloris Leachman, Peter Dinklage, Leslie Mann and Kelly Marie Tran star in the movie, out on November 25.

Universal Pictures has announced that their upcoming animated sequel, The Croods: A New Age, is moving up on the release schedule for 2020.

The film, which reunites Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener, was originally slated to debut in theaters in late December, via Deadline.

However, after Wonder Woman 1984 was moved to late December as well, Universal moved up the movie to premiere on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Croods: A New Age will open five days after No Time to Die, Pixar’s Soul, The Happiest Season and Voyagers.

In the new movie, the title family are back adventuring across the new world and find themselves challenged by a rival family, the Bettermans, who claim to be better and more evolved.

The Croods has topped this weekend’s box office with a gross of $44.7 million!

According to THR, the animated flick – which stars the voices of Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds – brought in a total of $108 million worldwide during its debut week.

Coming in at number two was the Gerard Butler action film Olympus Has Fallen, which earned $30.5 million in its first week of release.

The number three slot went to Oz the Great and Powerful, which grossed $22 million, bringing its total so far to $177.6 million.

Rounding out the top five were The Call, starring Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin, and the Tina Fey and Paul Rudd comedy Admission, which made $8.7 million and $6.4 million, respectively.

Opening in a nationwide release, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, and Ashley Benson‘s new flick Spring Breakers grossed $5 million in only about 1,100 theaters.
