Sean Hayes Reveals How 'Will & Grace' Landed Matt Damon in Fan-Favorite Guest Role

Sean Hayes is spilling some behind-the-scenes Will & Grace secrets!

After the hit sitcom came to an end for the second time earlier this week, Sean – who played Jack – is dishing some stories fans would love to know.

While appearing on PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing, Sean revealed how the show was able to land Matt Damon for a fan-favorite guest spot – and it was actually super easy!

“Matt and I used to play softball, a long, long, long, long, long time ago back then,” Sean shared via EW. “We were just playing and I was like, ‘Did you want to do the show?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, why not?’ Literally it was that easy. He was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll come on the show.’”

Back in season four, Matt played Owen, who was going against Jack to land a spot in the Manhattan Gay Men’s Chorus. When Jack finds out Owen is really straight, he enlists Grace (Debra Messing) to help expose Owen so that he can get the spot.

“It was just a smart twist on an old story, the guy who pretended to be gay to get into the gay chorus as opposed to a gay guy pretending to be straight,” Sean continued. “I think that was a really smart twist.”

'Will & Grace' Creators Address Tension on Set for Final Season

The series finale of Will & Grace aired last night and it’s no secret that there was some tension on set during the final season.

It was reported that Megan Mullally stepped away from the show for a few episodes and fans also noticed that she and other cast members had unfollowed each other on Instagram.

Series co-creator Max Mutchnick addressed the on-set tension during a post-show interview with EW.

“We always work under this kind of motto that everything’s about the work. It’s just about the work. And so if we stay true to that, then we just keep you guys out of whatever happened on the set this year because it would have done nothing but get in the way of the stories that we wanted to tell,” he said. “It was not an easy year, but the permanent legacy of the show is much more important to us than any temporary squabble that would take place on the stage.”

'Will & Grace' Series Finale Spoilers - Here's How It Ended!

SPOILER ALERT – This post contains spoilers for the series finale of Will & Grace, so beware of reading further!

Will & Grace has ended… for a second time.

The beloved NBC sitcom just had its second series finale. The original run of the show ended back in 2006 and the series returned in 2017 for a revival that lasted for three seasons.

Series creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick say that there will not be another revival.

“We’re not coming back,” Max told Deadline. “There’s no version of us coming back. David and I don’t want to do it anymore. We own these characters and love them, we’ve shared them and the four actors that play them certainly have a piece of the DNA of these characters in them and the network would ultimately be the ones to decide, but if David and I were given the authority to make the choice, I think it’s time that this story is over. We’ve told every story that we can tell for these characters.”

'Will & Grace' Creators Tease Finale, Confirm the Show Is Never Coming Back Again

The series finale of Will & Grace is airing TONIGHT (April 23) and this is the second time that fans of the show have had to say goodbye to the beloved series.

The NBC sitcom originally ran for eight seasons from 1998 through 2006. Over a decade later, the show made a return in 2017 and it aired for an additional three seasons. Don’t expect the show to ever return again though!

“We’re never coming back again. We would no sooner make this television show or a frame of it again. It won’t happen. That’s the final word,” series co-creator Max Mutchnick said in a new interview with Variety.

In the series finale episode, you can expect Debra Messing‘s Grace to give birth to her child and for Eric McCormack‘s Will to welcome his child via surrogate. They’re also going to move into a new house together.

“I feel like even in the years since the show first went off, the notion of what a quote-unquote conventional family looks like is very different,” series co-creator David Kohan said. “All the social pressures to keep a conventional nuclear family together have gone away, so our thought was, ‘Why not reimagine what can be considered a normal family structure?’”

Max added, “They are each other’s family. This ending, to me, felt a little bit more honest than the ending we did the first time, in that they end up together. It wasn’t as commonplace [in 2006] as it is now, so it made it easier for us to write about it, but I feel like this was right: They were always destined to be together.”

The series finale episode airs on NBC at 9/8c!

The first clip from the upcoming series finale, called “It’s Time,” debuted on People on Friday (April 17).

“We are sitting in the set of Will & Grace during our very last season, and we mean it this time,” Debra says with a laugh. Warning: spoilers ahead!

In a clip from one of the scenes, Grace is sitting next to a woman in a subway whens he cries out “I’m pregnant!”

“Aren’t you a little…” the woman says as Grace cries, “Old?! Yes!”

“We’ve done certain episodes that while they’re very much about right now, they will withstand the text of time. I have a greater appreciation of how great a job this is, so in some ways it’s harder to say goodbye this time,” says Eric.

“All I feel is gratitude to the writers, to my peers, to the fans,” Sean says.

“To have a job doing a show that people liked so much, that’s amazing,” adds Megan.

Here’s an episode summary: “With the apartment packed up, Will is determined to not reminisce about his life in the city or his ex, McCoy (guest star Matt Bomer). A pregnant Grace, on the verge of giving birth, keeps having false alarms of going into labor. Meanwhile, at the behest of Stan, Karen goes to the top of the Statue of Liberty to get closure with her ex-husband, and Jack’s dream of taking a bow on a Broadway stage becomes a very real possibility.”
