Academy President Releases Statement on Lack of Diverse Nominees

For the second year in a row, people are calling out The Academy for the lack of diversity in the acting categories for the Oscars.

Every actor and actress nominated this year is white. Notably snubbed stars including Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation, Will Smith for Concussion, Michael B. Jordan for Creed, and the cast of Straight Outta Compton, among others.

“Of course I am disappointed, but [it is] not to take away the greatness (of the films nominated). This has been a great year in film, it really has across the board. You are never going to know what is going to appear on the sheet of paper until you see it,” Academy Cheryl Boone Isaacs said to Deadline. “We have got to speed it up.”

Meanwhile, celebrities have been commenting on the lack of diverse nominations on Twitter all morning.

Ricky Gervais took to his Twitter account to speak to the issue, and make a joke at the Academy’s expense.

I agree with these concerns but it doesn’t detract from my desire to have Leonardo DiCaprio finally take home the gold. He is so talented and looooong overdue.

Considering the small amount of black people in the world compared to white people. How is this even still an issue? There aren’t enough black people in the world compared to white people to be good enough actors and actresses to be considered for these awards.

  • j b

He doesn’t deserve an Oscar for his crappy acting in this film. It doesn’t even deserve to be nominated. He deserved the Oscar for many other roles though.

  • Carla

    shut up with this crap

  • Ariana

Leave it to Al Sharpton to make this an issue. Please, maybe there are onyl white nomaniies because they gave the best performence? Come on! Most of the black actors this year did not perform any outstanding work like Leo DiCaprio, Bree Larson or the other nomannies.
If anyone was robbed of an nomiation its Johnny Depp. You don’t hear him complaing and throwing tantrums because he isn’t nomianted. Sick of the PC crap.

  • Gina

Go suck an egg. From the small pool that exists, there are still some great ones. What does that tell you?

Yet Jennifer Lawrence is nominated every year… Who the fuck is she sleeping with?

I hope this is sarcasm. It’s just too dumb to make sense.

There goes the MYTH of liberal Hollywood. The Oscars is the symptom not the cause.

  • VanityInsecurity

Please tell me which black actors deserve a nomination for their incredible work this year that’s Oscar worthy.. I’ll wait.

  • FrenchGirl

Creed’s team or Compton’s team also

  • VanityInsecurity

please be specific to an actor not an entire movie..

  • Reba

Not just black actors, people are lamenting the shut out of people of color as a whole. But since you waited a whole 22 minutes to be shut down, I’ll happily oblige… Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina), Michael B. Jordan (Creed) , Rinko Kikuchi (Kimiko), Benicio Del Toro (Sicario), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton – worth noting the only nominations for this film were the writers… who are white), and Ryan Coogler (director of Creed). All noted people of color within an industry that has years and years of shutting out those who are not white. Have you even watched the films? Probably not if you have to ask that question. You might wanna pretend there isn’t a problem but there is and your denial of that doesn’t make it any less true. It just means you’d rather ignore reality and remain willfully ignorant. Stay simple, kid.

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

Jennifer nominated why kristen stewart deserved a nomination

  • devvv

Diversity doesn’t equate to only black people. There were minimal PoC nominated in general. And please open a book. In the WORLD, white people are the minority.

  • Cyber Slammer

Leo was raped by a bear. Anyone else that can say that among the nominees? No? Then give him the trophy.

  • Ariana

I agree with you. The fact is that none of the black actors this year gave really good work compared to something like Leonardo DiCpario or Brie Larson have done.
And also many people suspect that Alejandro will win Best Director again. So giving Best Director to a Mexican is racist? Okay.

I remember last year people demanded they change the committee of the Academy and that was done. Most people do not realize that the Oscars are a peer reviewed and voting process committee. People like Spielberg and Eastwood , Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, are all apart of the many folks who vote. So are they racist if they happen to like a performance played by a white better then a black? These PC idiots make no sense.

  • millerz

you took the words out of my mouth! lmao I think people think when she does a movie they have to vote for her. Joy wasn’t bad but she’s the same in every movie!! I thought she was phenomenal in Silver Linings, that she totally deserved. But this movie? No way! Not over Maggie Smith or a few other actresses. All I’ll say is Brie Larson better win or I will protest haha

  • millerz

I used to think the Oscars were magical and a celebration of THE BEST in movies. But I’m wrong! It’s all politics. Especially with Jennifer Lawrence nominated again. She’s not Meryl Streep she’ll never be Meryl Streep, but because someone said it once, people think she needs to be nominated every year. She didn’t deserve one in American Hustle and she definitely doesn’t deserve one for Joy. She’s good don’t get me wrong but she doesn’t deserve a nomination for every single movie.

  • Ariana

None of those actors gave a performance like DiCaprio or Larson did. That is a fact.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

She is the most over-rated actress who ever lived. She’s not bad — she’s even quite good — but she’s nothing special. She doesn’t even do accents! It’s basically herself over and over.

  • Reba

In a comment above you spoke about the “nomannies” and who was “nomianted.” That was the moment that you lost any credibility in the discussion about having the authority to make a judgment about quality. Maybe you should grab yourself a dictionary, not only to bone up on your spelling but to educate you to the difference between opinion and fact.

  • jay

    lol, nailed it.

  • Arx

I completely agree! I don’t think she’s a bad actor but getting nominated every time she does a (non-action) film is ridiculous. There’re actresses who work just as hard and are equally if not more talented but get completely overlooked. It doesn’t seem right.

  • Ariana

Why don’t you educate yourself idiot? Go cry racism like Zendaya and Al Sharpton then!

  • LaCroix

is that a joke or what? All of those actors you mentioned are not on any type of level of acting worthy of an Oscar.. and calling someone ignorant to try and prove a point is borderline passive aggressive.

  • VanityInsecurity

There are many talented people in the business but the Oscars are about the best of the best, not about color of someone’s skin..the fact that you see things this way tells me how you don’t know the industry at all. Although performances where good this year from many other actors I feel like the one’s nominated truly deserve it. Best of the Best, the one’s you have mentioned are on a level below the nominees. And honestly the fact that you are so incredibly rude & has to resort to derogatory terms.. and the only problem I see is the constant bashing of an industry that clearly can’t be bullied in any way into existence.

  • AeeJay

    well said & agreed.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

And she doesn’t seem to know – or care – that all this unprecedented attention makes her look like Weinstein’s whore. Really, it looks bad. People are starting to tire of her big mouth on top of the constant attention, top-billing roles, and awards, and are starting to wonder what the real reason is for all this.

  • millerz

I think Michael B Jordan was phenomenal in Creed, I think he definitely deserved one. I did not see the Will Smith one so I can’t say about him. Honestly I’m just so glad Brie Larson and Rachel McAdams were nominated lol I feel like they’ve been so underrated

  • xyz

The same whining every year…. Noone cares really….

  • Rita Fernandes

Black people is clearly better at some sports, i don’t see people complaining about the lack of white diversity in these sports. Not everything is about race, sometimes is just about being better at your job!

  • Jane

Oh my God! wilful blindness. They nominated Silvester Stallone and not Michael B. Jordan even though Sly himself said that MBJ carried the movie.
And Idris’ performance was below everyone’s? You’re sticking with that opinion? Have you SEEN Beasts of No Nation? You are so full of shit its not even funny.

  • Jane

or just honest. Have you heard of that concept? You don’t seem very in touch with reality.

  • Josh Weaver

She is acting. Have you seen any of her movies? I doubt it. She has real talent, in case you could possibly imagine it.

  • Josh Weaver

There are no actresses today that have her level of talent. Period.

  • Josh Weaver

Then you didn’t actually see his film.

  • Josh Weaver

Then you didn’t actually see his film.

  • Josh Weaver

None of those actors performances were better than those nominated. Buy a ticket and see the movies you are talking about.

  • Josh Weaver

I’ve seen it and it doesn’t match the nominees. You’re the one that is full of crap.

  • Josh Weaver

Maybe you should get a grip and calm down.

  • Josh Weaver

Since when are you the arbitrator of what people can comment on?

  • Jane

I notice that you weave through what I said to pick on one thing you can be subjective about; and subjective without even giving a single reason why ‘it doesn’t match the nominees’. Wait, here’s a reason; the cast is all black.
But I’m the one that’s full of crap? Okay.

  • Jane

How is that a fact? Where is the supporting data to support that ‘fact’? sounds more like your subjective opinion being peddled as ‘fact’.
