CW Executive Explains Exactly Why 'Powerpuff Girls' Pilot Didn't Work

News broke this week that Powerpuff, the live action Powerpuff Girls television show that was being piloted at The CW, had been scrapped and will be reworked and repiloted later in the year.

Now, a CW executive is explaining exactly where the show went wrong.

“Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss,” CW Chairman & CEO Mark Pedowitz said (via TV Line). “We believe in the cast completely, we believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers, and we believe in the auspices of [executive producer] Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros.] Studios. In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see enough elements in there, we’re going to give it another shot. We didn’t want to go forward with what we had.”

The leads – Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault and Donald Faison – will all be returning for the rework. Other cast members, as well as writers/producers will all return as well.

About what went wrong with the original, he replied, “Tonally, it might have felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might have. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And in this case, we felt like, ‘Let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.’”

The first photos of Dove, Yana, and Chloe in costume as the trio went viral several weeks ago. A source explained why the costumes might look slightly different than what you expected.
