Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in the movie’s cover story, Salma said that she assumed that Marvel wanted her to play an older, grandma-type supporting role.
“Forget it,” Salma recalled saying. “I said, ‘God knows what kind of grandmother they want me to play.’ I’m used to being [told] I’m going to be the extra or the old prostitute. And then they said the director was Chloé Zhao, and I said, ‘OK! Let’s have the meeting!’”
During the meeting, she was pleasantly surprised to hear that they didn’t want her for a grandmother role at all, but instead as Ajak, one of the most important members of The Eternals and a character originally intended for a man.
Marvel’s The Eternals will hit theaters on November 5.
If you didn’t see, Salma‘s co-star Kit Harington had to do a little research on his own role!
