Announced today, Press Secretary Jen Psaki revealed that the boycott will be a diplomatic one only and is meant to send a message of disapproval for China’s record on human rights.

“The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic games given the [People's Republic of China's] ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses,” she shared at Monday briefing. “The athletes on team USA have our full support. We will be behind them 100 percent as we cheer them on from home. We will not be contributing to the fanfare of the games.”

The 2022 Beijing Olympics are set to kick off on February 4, before closing on the 20.

The US has boycotted the Games just once before in 1980 in Moscow over the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.

Then, in retaliation, the then Soviet Union boycotted the 1984 games in Los Angeles.
