TWICE's Nayeon Is Ready to 'POP!' as a Solo Star (Interview)

You are credited as a writer on “ALL OR NOTHING” and “LOVE COUNTDOWN.” Can you tell us about the meaning behind those songs?

For “LOVE COUNTDOWN”, I tried to write lyrics that match the melody and atmosphere of the song. It’s about the tickling feeling when you’re starting fall in love. For “ALL OR NOTHING,” I fell in love with this song from the moment I first heard it. It’s about the power you feel when you can control your own life and that you are the only one who can live your life.

You are also a writer on several TWICE songs. Which one are you most proud of as a lyricist, and are there are any lyrics you especially love?

Definitely “BABY BLUE LOVE.” As many of my fans know, baby blue is my favorite color, so I’ve always wanted to write about this color. The song “BABY BLUE LOVE” made this dream possible with melody and atmosphere that matches the warm and cool color of baby blue.

Little Mix‘s Jade Thirlwall also co-wrote “CANDYFLOSS”! Can you tell us more about how that happened?

We had the honor to work with Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall for one of our tracks in Taste of Love, “First Time.” Because we worked with her once before and experienced what an amazing artist she is, I felt honored and grateful to work with her again for my first solo album.

What song was the most fun to create, and which one was the most challenging and why?

“NO PROBLEM” and “LOVE COUNTDOWN” were actually the most fun to create because singing a duet was a new experience for me. Singing a duet created this whole different dynamic in the song. The most challenging song was actually “POP!” because I had to re-record the track multiple times to get that popping feeling to really come out of the song.

How does it feel to debut solo after seven years with TWICE, going from a senior artist to a rookie soloist? 

It definitely felt new, because it was my first time emerging out into the world by myself. However, because I received so much support from our members, fans, and staff, I felt like the whole team was together the whole time.
