Vanilla Ice Looks Back at Madonna Proposing to Him in the 1990s

Vanilla Ice is reflecting on his relationship with Madonna.

The 55-year-old “Ice Ice Baby” and the 64-year-old “Material Girl” pop star briefly dated in the early 1990s and she even proposed to him!

“Things were going so crazy and fast, man. I was just like, ‘What?! I thought the guy was supposed to do that [propose]. What do you mean? Wait a minute. This is too fast. I’m just getting started here and I’m way too young for this!’” Vanilla Ice recalled on the Just Jenny with Jenny Hutt podcast. “So, yeah. It was crazy. The more I think about it the more crazy it was.”

Vanilla Ice and Madonna first met in the early ’90s when she attended one of his shows in New York City when he was in his early 20s and she was in her early 30s.

While he was first excited to see her “dancing her ass off” in the crowd, Vanilla Ice quickly found Madonna “intimidating” because of her star status.

“I remember she came back to the dressing room and said hello to me, and she kind of gave me the sexy eyes and I was like… ‘I must be way, way mistaken on that,’” he recalled.

SBK Records co-founder Charles Koppelman (who is the podcast host Jenny Hutt‘s father) then told Vanilla Ice that he was not mistaken and Madonna was indeed interested in him, and set up a date for them.

“It got weird. And I didn’t know what was going on… My whole life is a snowglobe,” Vanilla Ice said of publicly dating Madonna. “You think Justin Bieber had it crazy? You have no idea what I had to go through, holy moly… My snowglobe was shaken up.”

Despite the world watching, Vanilla Ice said he and Madonna had a “normal relationship” behind closed doors.

“When you take away the [celebrity] factor… you have two people that have to deal with two people,” Vanilla Ice explained. “It’s just basically her and I, and at that point, it wasn’t anything different than any other normal relationship.”

Vanilla Ice and Madonna‘s relationship went south after she released her erotic coffee table book Sex in 1992, which included some of their sexual exploits.

“So, that book came out, and I thought it was so slutty. I didn’t want to be a part of it. I said, ‘How could you do that to me? And why did you do that to me?’ I could’ve sued her. I didn’t want to. I was like, ‘I don’t need that controversy. Let’s just let it go and you go your way and I go mine,’” Vanilla Ice recalled. “And she called me all the time and she was not happy with it and upset and I’d have to hang up on her a few times, but that was it.”

However, Vanilla Ice still admires Madonna, saying she’s “great,” “a legend,” and one of the greatest ever.”
