Reliable sources close to the story told the outlet that Fremantle is currently in the process of developing a reboot, and preliminary discussions have started with networks and streaming platforms.
The original show centered on a group of lifeguards who patrolled the beaches of LA County. The series was axed after just one season at NBC. However, it was then picked up for a syndicated version with All American Television with German distributor Beta Taurus financing the project.
That iteration ran for 10 seasons.
The rights to Baywatch, Deadline says, has been tricky, as Fremantle held the rights to the show after All American Television was assumed by Pearson, which then became Fremantle. But, Beta also held the international distribution rights until 2018.
Talks of a television remake had been brought up when the 2017 movie was released. However, because of the reviews towards it, it was then put on hold.
“I think we thought the film might have given us reason to reboot the TV series, but given the mixed reviews that didn’t happen straight away. I think if this remastered version is sold extensively and a new audience comes to Baywatch, then it will give us a real indication as to whether a new series could be successful. We would definitely think seriously about making a new series and maybe we’ll get approached by some broadcasters about making one,” Fremantle International COO Bob McCourt told Deadline.
Baywatch, the series, starred David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Alexandra Paul, David Charvet, Yasmine Bleeth and Nicole Eggert, and more.
Just recently, Pamela opened up in a candid conversation about how much she was paid for Baywatch.
