Artemis Fowl is getting another adaptation from Disney!

The bestselling book series by Eoin Colfer is being developed into a new animated television series for Disney Channel and Disney+, six years after the release of Disney’s live-action movie.

The announcement was made Sunday (October 11) during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel at New York Comic Con, where Eoin celebrated the anniversary of his first book.

The author will serve as an executive producer on the new series, which has officially been greenlit by Disney.

What Is the New Artemis Fowl Series About?

The animated action-adventure series will follow 13-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, who discovers a secret world of powerful fairies with advanced technology.

He comes up with a plan to capture one of the fairies and steal its magic in hopes of helping his seriously ill mother and saving his family.

The story is based on Eoin‘s bestselling books, which have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and been translated into 48 languages, according to Disney.

“I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the ‘Artemis Fowl’ animation on screen,” Eoin said in a statement. “Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”

The series is also being executive produced by Ben Juwono, whose credits include Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series, and Colleen Evanson, who worked on DuckTales and Monsters at Work.

Disney has not yet announced the voice cast or premiere date.

How Is the Series Different From the 2020 Artemis Fowl Movie?

Disney previously released a live-action Artemis Fowl movie in June 2020.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film starred Ferdia Shaw as Artemis alongside Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Colin Farrell, Lara McDonnell and Nonso Anozie.

That version followed 12-year-old Artemis as he tried to rescue his kidnapped father and became involved with a hidden world of fairies.

The movie received negative reviews, earning an 8% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The new television series will instead be animated, with Disney’s announced description focusing on Artemis trying to save his mother.

However, Disney has not confirmed whether the series will follow the books more closely than the movie or how many episodes are planned.
