A new version of Coach is in the works at NBC, with Ty Burrell potentially taking on the lead role!

The 59-year-old actor, best known for playing Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, is attached to executive produce a reboot of the classic sitcom, according to TheWrap.

Ty is also expected to star if the project moves forward, though NBC has not officially ordered the series.

The original Coach starred Craig T. Nelson and aired for nine seasons on ABC from 1989 to 1997.

What Is the New Coach Reboot About?

The new comedy will follow a legendary coach who returns to Minnesota to revive the basketball program at his former school while reconnecting with his community.

Unlike the original series, which focused on college football, the reboot will center on basketball.

The project is being developed as a single-camera comedy, another change from the original show’s traditional multicamera format.

Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, the brothers behind Peacock’s Mr. Throwback, are writing and executive producing the series alongside Ty.

No additional casting has been announced, and NBC has not revealed a potential premiere date.

Actor Craig T. Nelson attends 2017 Swing for Kids Golf Tournament benefitting Orthopaedic Institute for Children on November 6, 2017 in Palos Verdes Estates, California.

Will Craig T. Nelson Return for the Coach Reboot?

Craig T. Nelson played Hayden Fox, the head coach of a fictional Minnesota college football team, throughout the original series.

The sitcom also starred Jerry Van Dyke and Bill Fagerbakke as Hayden’s assistant coaches, along with Shelley Fabares as Christine Armstrong, Hayden’s girlfriend and eventual wife.

It’s not known whether Craig or any other surviving original cast members will appear in the new version.

This also isn’t the first time NBC has attempted to revive the show.

In 2015, the network ordered a sequel series that would have brought Craig back as Hayden Fox. The proposed series was canceled before reaching television.

Unlike that earlier revival, the newly announced project would introduce a basketball-focused storyline with Ty potentially leading the cast.

When Will the New Coach Series Premiere?

The reboot is still in development, and NBC has not officially picked it up for a full season.

That means there is no confirmed premiere date or episode count.

If the series moves forward, it would bring Ty back to a major network sitcom following his 11-season run on Modern Family, which ended in 2020.

The actor won two Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Phil Dunphy.
