Some fans may have been surprised to see last year’s American Idol winner Maddie Poppe appear during this year’s season finale… and here’s why.

Drama brewed between Maddie and the show last month after she made an appearance on the Disney-themed episode on April 21.

Maddie and her boyfriend, fellow season 16 finalist Caleb Lee Hutchinson, performed a brief duet of “A Whole New World” and the show failed to mention that her debut album Whirlwind was set to be released on May 17.

A week later, Maddie tweeted her frustration when no mention of the album was made during the next episode either. She wrote, “Was waiting for ‘ALSO from last week, our season 16 winner has an album coming out May 17th’….”

Maddie later added, “Unfortunately, I won’t be returning to perform for the finale.”

To add fuel to the fire, the next week, third place finalist Gabby Barrett performed her new single on the show and was given time to plug her new record deal with Warner Brothers Nashville.

While Maddie ended up appearing on the Idol finale, Variety reports that she was “devastated” that she wasn’t given a chance to perform her own song on the show.

The young musicians met while competing on this year’s reboot season of American Idol and they are still going strong as a couple!

Maddie was nominated for Competition Contestant of 2018 and she won the award.

Caleb joked on Instagram that night, “Just won the award for best non-invited Peoples Choice Award attendee!”

Maddie Ziegler, Olivia Holt, and Sabrina Carpenter hit the red carpet at the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Friday (June 22) in Los Angeles.

The 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards will take place TONIGHT and air on Saturday (June 23) on Disney Channel, Radio Disney, the Radio Disney app, and the DisneyNOW app.

Maddie Poppe and Adam Rippon share a big laugh together as they posed with their trophies outside of the Good Morning America Times Square studio on Tuesday morning (May 22) in New York City.

The 20-year-old singer was celebrating her American Idol win while the 28-year-old Olympic figure skater celebrated his Dancing with the Stars win with his partner, Jenna Johnson, who had the highest combined scores (audience vote, judges) to take the Mirrorball Trophy.

“It still hasn’t sunken in for like any of us,” Adam expressed during their joint appearance on GMA. “You’d be surprised, being America’s sweetheart doesn’t pay anything so if I do get a new nickname, I do hope it pays better than nothing.”

“I made friends on that show who are still are my best friends,” Maddie added. “I know they will be lifelong friends, and I met my boyfriend [Caleb Lee Hutchinson].”

Maddie Poppe teams up with Kermit the Frog for a performance during the American Idol season finale on Monday night (May 21) in Los Angeles.

The 20-year-old singer performed the song “Rainbow Connection” as her audition song and she got to sing it with the Muppets star during the finale.

It was revealed during the episode that Maddie and fellow finalist Caleb Lee Hutchinson are dating and they capped off the evening with a tender performance of “Over the Rainbow.”

American Idol just wrapped up its final episode of the season and named one contestant the winner!

The competition came down to three performers – Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe.

During the two night finale, the trio got a last chance to showcase their voices during three performances – an original song, their favorite song from the season and a song dedicated to their roots.

While the judges – Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan – were able to weigh in on the contestants performances, the elimination was completely decided by the public!

The final two contestants on American Idol this year were Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe… and they’re also a couple!

With just minutes to go until the winner was revealed during the finale on Monday (May 21), Caleb revealed that he is dating Maddie.

The moment happened while host Ryan Seacrest was introducing a performance from Caleb and Maddie. They did a stripped down version of “Over the Rainbow” while both sets of parents stood together and watched. So cute!

When they started holding hands near the end of the performance, the crowd went wild with cheers.

After the performance, Ryan announced that Idol is sending the couple on a trip to Hawaii!
